Job Description – Five Star Cake Decorator Duties & Responsibilities Customer Service
- Maintain an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with a focus on fast, friendly service.
- Assist customers with product suggestions, special orders, and food preparation ideas.
- Answer incoming calls professionally; resolve customer concerns and escalate to Store Director when needed.
- Utilize suggestive selling techniques via phone, in‑store intercom, and customer interactions.
- Prepare, trim, cut, shape, and ice cakes following established specifications (including “No Black Hole” icing standard).
- Personalize products and decorate cakes per customer requests and special-order instructions.
- Create decorations using icing, flower nails, fondant, gum paste, and other mediums; ability to transfer designs to cakes.
- Recreate or customize designs from online images or magazines.
- Demonstrate advanced decorating abilities including:
- Swags, drapes with fondant
- Hand‑formed roses
- Simple gum paste flowers
- Bows and cut‑outs using rolled fondant
- Marbled fondant
- Covering/enrobing cakes in fondant
- Whimsical cakes and shaped cakes
- Advanced boards and display designs
- Understand proper construction of wedding and groom’s cakes.
- Follow cake manual standards, including proper icing weights and use of the production list.
- Meet production expectations of $90–$100 retail per hour.
- Properly store finished and unfinished cakes to maintain quality.
- Assist with slicing bread and preparing bakery items (proofing, baking, packaging, icing).
- Perform product demonstrations using proper preparation and packaging techniques.
- Help train and mentor employees on basic decorating skills.
- Maintain bakery case cleanliness, product appearance, and inventory levels.
- Ensure all bakery equipment and areas meet sanitation and safety standards.
- Monitor and maintain proper temperatures during preparation, display, and storage.
- Assist with physical inventory every 4 weeks.
- Control inventory to maintain adequate product quantity, quality, and freshness.
- Stock and rotate product; organize the cooler and discard outdated items.
- Build displays, implement promotional and seasonal merchandising, and maintain a clean work area.
- Ensure proper code dating practices for all products.
- Follow company policies as outlined in the Albertsons/Tom Thumb Employee Handbook.
- Perform receiving duties: break down loads, verify orders, inspect quality, report shortages, and follow temperature and storage guidelines.
- Maintain backup cake inventory in the freezer using production sheets.
- Accurately complete and monitor daily log sheets, production charts, Sales & Labor, and other required paperwork.
- Control shrink and costs through proper handling, storage, and inventory rotation.
- Ensure correct product signage and compliance with labeling laws, federal/state regulations, and company policies.
- Ensure workplace safety, sanitation, and cleanliness across the sales floor, work areas, freezer, cooler, equipment, prep, and display areas.
- Maintain code‑date compliance and adhere to all sanitation regulations.
- Follow emergency procedures for equipment or software malfunctions.
- Perform all job duties with honesty, integrity, and accuracy.
