The Alternative High School Teacher/Director provides instruction, leadership, and support for students enrolled in a non-traditional learning environment. The role focuses on supporting at-risk students, credit-recovery students, and students requiring individualized instruction while ensuring compliance with Iowa graduation requirements and district policies. An individual who can adapt curriculum and provide individualized instruction for students with varying academic and social needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education
- Valid Iowa Teaching License through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners
- Secondary teaching endorsement, Special Education Endorsement preferred
- Experience working with at-risk youth or alternative education programs preferred
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Core Responsibilities
Instruction and Student Support
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction for students with diverse learning needs
- Implement district curriculum aligned to Iowa academic standards
- Support credit recovery, competency-based learning, or flexible scheduling programs
- Monitor student academic progress and adjust instruction accordingly
Student Intervention & Case Management
- Develop individual learning plans for students
- Monitor attendance, behavior, and academic progress
- Participate in IEP, 504, and MTSS meetings
- Provide academic mentoring and goal setting for students
Program Leadership
- Oversee daily operations of the alternative education program
- Coordinate enrollment and intake of students referred to the program
- Develop policies and expectations for the alternative program
- Supervise staff and evaluate instruction
- Ensure compliance with state and district education standards
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to build relationships with at-risk students
- Strong classroom management and behavior intervention
- Knowledge of trauma-informed teaching practices
