Asphalt Products Laboratory Technician

Job Summary:
The Asphalt Products Lab Technician is responsible for testing and analyzing asphalt materials, aggregates, and finished mix products to ensure compliance with company specifications, customer requirements, and applicable state or federal standards. This position supports the production process by monitoring quality at all stages and helping maintain consistent product performance and mix design integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
· Collect samples of asphalt binder, aggregates, and hot mix asphalt from the plant or job site.
· Perform standard laboratory tests such as gradation (sieve analysis), asphalt content and extraction, specific gravity and density, Marshall or Superpave stability and flow, moisture content, and air voids.
· Record, interpret, and report test results accurately and in a timely manner.
· Ensure all materials and mixes meet DOT, project, and company specifications.
· Monitor mix temperature, gradation, and binder content during production.
· Communicate with plant operators and supervisors about any adjustments needed to maintain mix quality.
· Maintain calibration records for lab and testing equipment.
· Maintain organized records of all test results and sample logs.
· Prepare daily or weekly quality control reports.
· Assist in mixing design development and updates when required.
· Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
· Ensure proper handling and disposal of materials and chemicals.
· Comply with state DOT and environmental regulations.
· Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
· Physical ability to lift samples and work in a hot, outdoor environment.
Work Environment:
· Primarily laboratory-based with regular visits to the asphalt plant and job sites.
· Exposure to heat, noise, dust, and asphalt fumes.
· May require extended hours during peak paving season.
Skills Needed:
· Experience in Quality Control, Asphalt Preferred, but negotiable
· TDOT Asphalt Mix Designs Certification a Plus
· TDOT Asphalt Concrete Plant Technician Certification a plus
· Needs to be Mathematically Inclined
· Outgoing, Energetic personality
· Ability to take Initiative
· Team Player Mentality
