Asphalt Paving Foreman – Job Description
Position Summary
The Asphalt Roadway Foreman oversees daily paving and road construction operations, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications. This role coordinates crews, equipment, materials, and communicates with supervisors, inspectors, and trucking operations to maintain production and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Crew & Project Leadership
Supervise and direct asphalt paving crews, laborers, equipment operators, and truck drivers.
Assign daily tasks and monitor progress to ensure production goals are met.
Train new crew members on proper techniques, safety rules, and equipment operation.
Conduct daily safety briefings and ensure compliance with company and OSHA standards.
Paving Operations
Oversee asphalt laydown, compaction, grading, and traffic control activities.
Ensure proper depth, slope, and smoothness according to plans and DOT specifications.
Monitor mix temperatures, truck flow, and compaction equipment timing.
Coordinate with the plant to maintain a steady supply of materials.
Quality Control
Inspect completed work for uniformity, smoothness, density, and adherence to plans.
Identify issues such as segregation, mat defects, and joint quality; implement corrections.
Work alongside inspectors to meet project requirements.
Equipment & Materials
Ensure proper operation and maintenance of pavers, rollers, skid steers, and related equipment.
Report equipment issues and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.
Track daily materials usage and prevent waste.
Documentation & Communication
Maintain daily logs including work performed, crew attendance, truck tickets, and equipment use.
Communicate with project managers, superintendents, inspectors, and traffic control teams.
Assist in planning weekly schedules, manpower needs, and equipment requirements.
Qualifications
5 years' experience in asphalt paving or heavy civil construction (foreman experience preferred).
Strong understanding of DOT and municipal paving standards.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, grades, and job specifications.
Leadership skills with ability to motivate and direct crews.
Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and traffic control procedures.
Valid driver's license; CDL is a plus.
