Thrive is a placement agency for part-time tutors and full-time teachers providing in-home tutoring and personalized learning support.
We are hiring an in-home elementary foundational skills tutor for a student in Southbury, Connecticut. We are seeking a warm, engaging elementary educator who is deeply knowledgeable in early literacy and foundational skill development, and who is passionate about building both academic confidence and a love of learning.
This student is a reluctant reader who needs intentional, skill-based instruction to strengthen core reading foundations, close any emerging gaps, and develop positive learning habits that will support long-term academic success.
Duties
- Assess students' present levels of performance to gain a clear picture of our baseline
- Travel to the student’s home to conduct in-person tutoring sessions
- Prepare high-impact, developmentally appropriate lessons in advance of each tutoring session
- Lead engaging, one-on-one tutoring sessions tailored to the student’s academic needs, learning style, and interests
- Build reading confidence through structured, multisensory, and encouraging instruction
- Monitor progress and adjust instruction based on ongoing formative assessments
- Collaborate with the Thrive team and family on a personalized learning plan
- Provide parents with feedback after each session
- Provide the student with simple post-session checklists and practice guidance
- Communicate promptly and professionally with Thrive team members and family
- Follow through on all action items and instructional commitments
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education or reading preferred
- Strong background in elementary education, reading intervention, or literacy development
- Experience working with reluctant readers and building foundational reading skills
- Must be highly dependable and responsible
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to build rapport with children and parents
- Deep knowledge of early literacy development, phonics, fluency, and comprehension
- Patient, warm, and encouraging instructional style
- Commitment to superior customer service, including punctuality and responsiveness
- Impeccable attention to detail
- Self-starter, organized, and eager to work in a personalized learning environment
- Track record of helping students make measurable academic growth
- Experience developing individualized, skill-based lesson plans
Commitment
- Starting with 1 hour per week, with the potential to add a second session as needed
- In-home sessions in Southbury, Connecticut
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $40.00 - $80.00 per hour
