What are the responsibilities and job description for the Customs Entry Writer position at THOMAS Freight?
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file customs entries via ABI in accordance with CBP regulations
- Classify goods using HTS codes and determine applicable duties, taxes, and fees
- Review commercial invoices, packing lists, and shipping documents for accuracy
- Coordinate with brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies
- Ensure compliance with FDA, USDA, EPA, and other partner government agencies (as applicable)
- Monitor shipment status and resolve clearance issues or holds
- Maintain records in compliance with audit and recordkeeping requirements
- Communicate with clients regarding documentation, delays, and compliance matters
Qualifications:
- 2–5 years of experience in customs brokerage or import operations
- Strong knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations and HTS classification
- Experience with ABI systems (e.g., CargoWise, Descartes, or similar)
- Familiarity with PGA requirements (FDA, USDA, etc.)
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple entries in a fast-paced environment
- Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) preferred but not required
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with high-volume entry processing
- Knowledge of duty drawback, FTZ, or bonded shipments (a plus)
- Strong communication and client service skills
