Position Description

Think Tank is seeking a highly motivated Fisheries Stock Assessment Model Developer Level II to support NOAA with the development, evaluation, and implementation of stock assessment methods and models. This role will advance NOAA Fisheries' mission of maintaining sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems by producing reliable scientific information for fishery management councils and partners.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fisheries science, quantitative ecology, or related fields, with demonstrated experience in data analysis, model development, and scientific communication. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with national and regional stock assessment scientists, contribute to the NOAA Fisheries Toolbox (NFT), and participate in high-impact research and management efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare proposals and plans for stock assessment methods and model development.
  • Conduct data and statistical analyses to develop and evaluate new models and methods.
  • Perform sensitivity analyses and robustness testing to validate model performance.
  • Collaborate with software developers to ensure assessment tools meet end-user needs.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and user guides for modeling tools.
  • Deliver scientific presentations at internal meetings and international research forums.
  • Provide training for internal and external stakeholders on new methods and model advancements.
  • Draft manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Facilitate and lead public and panel reviews of fisheries population assessments.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in fisheries science, quantitative ecology, statistics, or related discipline & 3 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with NOAA Fisheries' stock assessments, including analytical techniques and terminology.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement standards in data management and documentation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
    • Project management of complex scientific programs.
    • Coordinating and leading diverse scientific teams.
    • Communicating technical concepts effectively to scientific, management, and public audiences.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to work independently.
  • Adaptability to shifting priorities and fast-paced environments.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to scientific rigor.
