The Opportunity
The Control Systems Project Engineer II leads technical execution of automation and control system projects, including high-visibility mission-critical and data center environments. In this role, you will design, program, and commission PLC and SCADA/HMI systems while ensuring project deliverables meet Thermo Systems’ technical and quality standards.

Working closely with project managers, engineers, and commissioning teams, you will guide system integration from design through commissioning and turnover. While this role does not include formal people management responsibilities, it plays a key role in mentoring junior engineers and maintaining technical excellence across project deliverables.

This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy hands-on technical leadership, complex automation challenges, and delivering reliable systems within high-performance industrial environments.

What You’ll Do
Core Responsibilities

  • Lead design, development, and integration of PLC and SCADA/HMI systems for automation projects.
  • Execute system start-up, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • Develop and review control narratives, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and as-built documentation.
  • Specify instrumentation, I/O lists, and cause-and-effect matrices aligned with project requirements.
  • Support system integration activities across industrial automation environments.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, commissioning teams, and subcontractors to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Communicate clearly with customers and stakeholders during design reviews, testing phases, and commissioning activities.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers supporting project work.
  • Identify project risks early and collaborate with teams to develop effective technical solutions.

Quality, Safety & Process

  • Ensure deliverables meet Thermo Systems’ Quality Management System (QMS) standards.
  • Follow established engineering processes and documentation practices throughout project execution.
  • Support cybersecurity and IT/OT integration requirements for modern industrial automation systems.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail in system design, testing, and commissioning activities.

People Leadership

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers through design reviews, commissioning support, and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote consistent engineering standards and best practices across project teams.

What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Controls Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • Typically 5–7 years of experience in controls engineering, industrial automation, or system integration environments.
  • Experience supporting complex automation projects including commissioning and testing activities.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong PLC programming experience within Rockwell Automation or Siemens environments.
  • Experience developing SCADA/HMI systems using AVEVA, Ignition, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of industrial networking and modern IT/OT integration practices.
  • Experience supporting FAT, SAT, and commissioning activities for automation systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in complex automation environments.
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly with engineers, project managers, and customers.
  • Strong organizational and collaboration skills across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and accountability.

What You’ll Get

  • Competitive compensation with annual bonus opportunity
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with low-cost options
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional credential support
  • In-house and external technical training opportunities
  • Exposure to complex, high-impact automation projects
  • A collaborative culture built on integrity, accountability, and teamwork
