Key Responsibilities
The CNC lathe machinist is responsible for the setup, operation, and optimization of CNC turning centers to manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering specifications. This role requires strong technical expertise in machining processes, blueprint interpretation, and quality control to ensure production of high-quality parts within tight tolerances. The ideal candidate is a hands-on professional with the ability to troubleshoot, improve processes, and support overall shop efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC lathes, including multi-axis and live tooling machines, to produce complex components
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T requirements to ensure part accuracy
- Select and install tooling, set offsets, and perform first-piece inspections
- Adjust feeds, speeds, and cutting parameters to optimize performance and tool life
- Edit and troubleshoot G-code programs as needed to maintain production flow
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, etc.)
- Identify and resolve machining issues, including tool wear, machine malfunctions, and dimensional discrepancies
- Maintain proper documentation of production runs, inspections, and quality checks
- Adhere to all safety standards and maintain a clean, organized work environment
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to improve processes and resolve issues
- 5 years of CNC lathe machining experience (aerospace or high-precision manufacturing preferred)
- Strong experience with multi-axis CNC lathes and live tooling (mill-turn experience a plus)
- Proficient in blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation
- Working knowledge of G-code programming and editing
- Experience with Fanuc or similar CNC controls
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Experience in aerospace manufacturing and AS9100 environments
- Familiarity with CMM inspection processes
- Ability to mentor or train junior machinists
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience
- Fast-paced, precision manufacturing environment
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
