Camp Cook (CYN)

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Cook is responsible for prepping, preparing, and serving well-rounded meals each day at camp, ensuring the kitchen and dining hall is clean and organized, communicating with the Program Director on meals, directing kitchen assistants, planning and prepping meals for those with dietary restrictions, and other duties as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Prep and serve meals for campers and staff.
2. Accommodate dietary needs with similar menu substitutions.
3. Communicate food needs or issues with Food Service Director.
4. Maintain a clean and organized kitchen and dining hall.
5. Follow industry standards for food prep, storage, and handling.
6. Direct kitchen staff.
7. Ensure eating areas are cleaned in-between meals.
8. Work with counselors using the ‘Kitchen Request’ system.
9. Ensure dishes are cleaned and put away properly between meals.
10. Maintain a high level of professionalism between themselves and other staff members.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Upholding the YMCA’s commitment to the safety and well-being of youth in our programs is a core responsibility of all staff regardless of position.

1. Attend required abuse risk management training.
2. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
3. Adhere to procedures related to managing and supervising high-risk activities.
4. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
5. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be at least 21 Years old and a high-school graduate
2. Must have or be willing to obtain ServSafe Certification
3. Must be able to work well with others
4. Have experience cooking in a similar setting
5. Must be flexible and organized

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time
2. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds
3. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking
4. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate
5. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull trays of food
6. Exposure to heat for extended periods of time from ovens, stoves, hot water, dishwasher, & other kitchen appliances.
7. Works with sharp utensils such as knives and other hazardous kitchen tools
8. Noise level is typically moderate but can at times be loud.
