What are the responsibilities and job description for the Steel Pipe Fabrication Technician position at The Viking Group?
Join Viking as a Steel Pipe Fabrication Technician
Step into a fast-moving fabrication shop where you’ll work hands-on with steel pipe—cutting, threading, grooving, grinding, inspecting, and helping parts move from raw material to finished product. You’ll rotate through stations that include plasma cutting, semi-automatic fabrication, welding support, robotics-assisted processes, and material handling. We have openings on first and second shift and provide thorough, on-the-job training.
What You’ll Do
- Run fabrication machinery: plasma cutters, cold saws/band saws, threading and grooving machines, grinders, and semi-automatic equipment.
- Support shop operations across fabrication, welding support, machine operation, robotics, and material handling.
- Prepare steel pipe and materials—cut, groove, thread, grind—to meet customer specs and production targets.
- Assist with machine operations such as outlet placement and automated fabrication processes.
- Read and interpret work orders, blueprints/specs, measurements, and tape measures to ensure accuracy.
- Inspect materials, welds, and finished goods for defects and dimensional conformance.
- Perform finishing tasks: grinding, deburring, cleanup, and general fabrication support.
- Load, unload, stage, organize, and move steel pipe, fittings, and raw materials through the workflow.
- Bundle, band, label, and prepare orders for shipment.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, CombiLift equipment, overhead cranes, and other material handling tools.
- Troubleshoot minor production or equipment issues and escalate concerns to leadership.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe; follow SOPs and best practices.
- Follow all safety protocols including PPE, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and standard procedures.
- Complete required operational, safety, and production training and demonstrate competency.
- Support additional production needs as assigned by Fabrication Leadership or Branch Operations Management.
Qualifications & Experience
- Background in manufacturing, fabrication, warehouse, machine operation, construction, mechanical trades, or general labor preferred.
- Steel fabrication, welding, robotics, or industrial production experience is a plus (not required).
- Proven ability to work safely in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Mechanical aptitude; comfortable with hand/power tools, fabrication equipment, and production machinery.
- Able to read a tape measure and perform basic math.
- Ability to read/follow work instructions, production schedules, and fabrication specifications preferred.
- Adaptable to changing schedules, priorities, and workflow demands.
- Forklift/material handling experience preferred.
- Willing to learn fabrication processes, welding support, robotics, and machine operation through hands-on training.
Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, bend, twist, climb, and perform repetitive tasks for the full shift.
- Frequently lift, move, and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Work safely around moving machinery, forklifts, cranes, sparks, and welding operations.
- Comfortable in an industrial environment with noise, dust, heat, sparks, fumes, and similar conditions.
