Salary Range: Beginning at $76,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Senior Police Officer/Detective provides service, information, and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders.

Core Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and all property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System. Exercises independent judgment within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
  • Polices the property under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System by means of vehicle or on foot.
  • Preserves the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding to prevent or suppress crime when authorized by law; interviews suspects, witnesses, and complainants; collects and processes evidence; writes investigative supplements; compiles, publishes, and maintains crime statistics; and compiles and files cases with the District Attorney’s office.
  • Provides service, information and directions to students, employees, and visitors; prepares crime analysis reports, and risk assessments; organizes, schedules, and presents crime prevention programs; and analyzes security designs for new construction (security systems).
  • Executes all lawful process; arrests offenders without warrant where authorized by law; investigates all criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, recovers stolen or lost property; attempts to locate missing persons.
  • Enforces traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody, or issuing citations or warnings; investigates motor vehicle collisions; enforces Board of Regents' Rules and Regulations.
  • Participates in the training of new officers through a structured Field Training Program and in-service training of all officers on shift; monitor and evaluate staff members.
  • Discusses cases with prosecuting attorneys, prepares evidence, and appears as a witness in court.
  • Promotes safety and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Successful completion of The University of Texas System Police Academy Basic Peace Officer Course or other equivalent academy.
  • Must hold, or be able to obtain upon hire, a Peace Officer Commission from The University of Texas System.
  • Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Office of the Director of Police, the Board of Regents, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education concerning age requirements and physical, mental, and educational standards.
  • High School or GED equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of related work experience as a licensed peace officer.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience working in criminal investigations to include specialized criminal investigation training.

Working Conditions

Equipment

  • Must be proficient in the operation and safety procedures of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned tasks.

Working Environment

  • Work involves a high degree of hazard normally associated with law enforcement. Exposure to outside weather conditions. May be required to work either day or night on any one of three shifts with varying days off.

Physical Demands

Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. Excellent physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility.

This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
