Salary Range: Beginning at $110,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Captain for University Police provides supervisory skills to direct a police force at a component institution of The University of Texas System. This role ensures enforcement of laws, university policies, and Board of Regents regulations while maintaining high standards of conduct among staff, students, and visitors. Serves as a Campus Security Authority in compliance with the Clery Act.

Core Responsibilities

  • Oversees the selection, indoctrination, training, and supervision of police personnel.Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises departmental activities including the enforcement of criminal law, rules and regulations of the Board of Regents, the conduct of staff, students, and visitors; preparing and reviewing various reports and making recommendations to the Chief of the University Police; assists in recruitment programs; assisting with managing and analysis of salary and budget; and conducts evaluations and analyses of department objectives.
  • Performs supervisory duties of subordinate police personnel, including disseminating information to shift operations, active investigations, and current criminal activity; checking performance, appearance, and conduct; evaluating subordinates' work; coordinating training needs; managing daily patrol operations; instructing in university police training programs; and preparing, reviewing, and writing performance evaluations of personnel.
  • Investigates circumstances surrounding violations of law and University regulations or policies.
  • Confers with local law enforcement, court, and governmental officials on matters of mutual interest; assists local police agencies in serving warrants on property within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Active TCOLE Peace Officer License unless a lateral hire from outside the State of Texas.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Advanced Certificate or equivalent training and certification requirements for out-of-state candidates, as approved by TCOLE.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension and must be eligible to drive without limitation a motor vehicle owned or leased by The University of Texas System.
  • Seven (7) years of full-time, continuous law enforcement service with at least two (2) of these years as a lieutenant or higher rank OR Minimum 15 years of full-time, continuous law enforcement service with at least five (5) years as a lieutenant or higher rank.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Eight (8) or more years of experience managing complex multijurisdictional operations.
  • Prior management or leadership experience in a law enforcement setting as a captain or higher rank.
  • TCOLE Instructor Certificate.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Master Certificate.
  • Law enforcement leadership courses.

Working Conditions

  • Work involves a high degree of hazard normally associated with law enforcement. Exposure to outside weather conditions. May be required to work on any one of three shifts with varying days off.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee’s responsibility.

This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
