About the Opportunity
The UNC System Office is searching for an Assistant Director for the the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program. The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program is a competitive, merit-based forgivable loan program providing tuition assistance of up to $10,000 per year for qualified students committed to teaching elementary education, special education, science, technology, engineering, or math in a North Carolina public school. The purpose of the program is to recruit, prepare and support future teachers who attend selected partner institutions of higher education in North Carolina and agree to teach in North Carolina public schools upon program completion.

The NC Teaching Fellows Program Assistant Director will serve as the deputy of the NC Teaching Fellows Program to provide program management, strategic planning, outreach and communications to external organizations, and business and financial management for the growing statewide NC Teaching Fellows Program. This position will work closely with fellows, campus directors, UNC campuses, independent universities, NC School Districts, the NC Teaching Fellows Advisory Board, and the NC Teaching Fellows Commission members to ensure the success of the statewide NC Teaching Fellows Program. In addition, this role will partner with institutions, external vendors, and Commission members to lead and execute the Teaching Fellows application process semiannually. The position requires the ability to travel across the state on occasion as well as require leading and facilitation through virtual meetings.

This position is a hybrid work arrangement and will work 3 days per week at the Dillon building in downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Strategy and Policy division is charged with enhancing and furthering the UNC System's strategic goals. The division partners with the President and chancellors on System-wide strategic initiatives, is responsible for the institutional performance measurement framework, and serves as a higher-education policy expert to the President, the Board of Governors, and the NC General Assembly. The division also tracks and assesses state and national trends in higher education, and their likely impact on the UNC System, and proactively identifies new initiatives to support System strategies. The division also provides oversight of the University and P12 Partnerships unit as well as the GEAR UP Program.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Master's degree or higher in a related area or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Competencies
*Experience in higher education and/or as an educational leader *Ability to analyze legislative language and be prepared to lead strategic planning processes, program activities, and facilitate meetings with stakeholders such as the Teaching Fellows Commission, NCSEAA, Program Directors, Deans, and the UNC Board of Governors *The capacity to engage in conversations around policy and legislation with various stakeholders, strong written and verbal communication skills, and team orientation with strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
*Experience working within education/education policy *Familiarity with P12 education, maintaining database records, and program reporting *Experience coordinating events and developing educational trainings and activities *Strong emotional intelligence and a comprehensive understanding of successful teaching preparation, including experience with mentoring and/or coaching
