Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit | Created in 2010, the Department of Nanoscience is composed of individuals with research interests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology committed to using interdisciplinary approaches to solve complex problems on the nanoscale. The Department of Nanoscience is seeking a creative junior researcher that will contribute to the growth and innovation of the department and JSNN. Successful candidates will be recommended for appointment as tenure-track Assistant Professor and will become a member of a department with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. The Nanoscience Department is located at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) which is a 105,000-square-foot research and teaching facility. The JSNN is administered by both UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University. It represents a unique collaboration between faculty in the pure/applied sciences and engineering. The department has an enrollment of 58 graduate students and offers a Professional MS Degree in Nanoscience and a Ph.D. in Nanoscience. The research tools available at the JSNN include a nanoelectronics and nanobioelectronics cleanroom; nanofabrication facility with nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, mixing, and scale-up facilities; characterization suite, including NMR facility, analytical facility, and microscopy lab; shared nanoscience labs, including genomics, nanobiology, BSL-3, and a nanobiophysics and nanochemistry visualization and computing facility. Position Summary | The Nanoscience Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro seeks to hire a tenure track faculty member at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in support of its recent addition of a concentration in synthetic biology to its Ph.D. program. The Department of Nanoscience is a dynamic and transdisciplinary department that is graduate-only and research-intensive. The Department of Nanoscience offers several graduate degree programs including Ph.D.'s in Nanoscience with concentrations in Synthetic Biology and in Advanced Materials; a thesis-based MS; and a Professional MS in collaboration with the Bryan School of Business and Economics. The department is located within the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, an institution joined at the Dean level between the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University. |

Preferred Qualifications | Applicants who work in the field of synthetic biology and can complement or grow current research efforts in the department (either experimentally or computationally) are welcome to apply. Of particular interest are those whose research programs will focus on metabolic engineering/bioprocess engineering, tissue engineering, or bioprinting; however all strong applicants working in the field of synthetic biology broadly defined will be considered. Qualified applicants will have an earned Ph.D. in a relevant science discipline such as biomedical engineering, bioengineering, molecular biology, or microbiology, and have at least two years of postdoctoral training. Competitive candidates will have an excellent record of research as demonstrated by their publication record and exhibit great promise of extramural funding or have an established record of extramural funding. New faculty will be expected to develop an externally-supported research program, teach effectively at the graduate level, collaborate with researchers in the Joint School of Nanoscience & Nanoengineering as well as with researchers in their field, and participate in Departmental and University service activities, with opportunities at the Joint School to engage in entrepreneurial activities. |
