Department Summary

The Career Center is a centralized student services unit that supports the Oxford and regional campuses. The Career Center team is comprised of nine (9) full-time staff, five (5) graduate assistants, twelve (12) Peer Career Educators, and two student marketing assistants. We offer a comprehensive array of services and resources that support clients in their exploration of occupational pathways and academic majors that align with their career goals and objectives. We engage students in developing life-long skills to leverage their knowledge of self, curricular and co-curricular experiences, and research skills to transition successfully from college to employment or graduate study. Through myriad services and networking events offered by our unit, students can connect with employers and graduate/professional school admissions officers, and we link external stakeholders with key faculty, staff and administrators who advise students through the job search or graduate admissions process.

Role Summary

Advises students on career planning, develops a comprehensive recruiting communication strategy, and establishes an extended professional network to effectively promote and market students and programs to local and national employers.


  • Database Management: Proficiency in platforms like Handshake or other career services software to manage employer contacts, job postings, interviews, and event logistics, and to instruct internal and external users.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Especially Excel, Word, and Outlook for scheduling, reporting, and communication tasks.
  • Employer Engagement: Building and maintaining relationships with private, public, and nonprofit employers to create job and internship opportunities.
  • Outreach Strategy: Cold calling, direct mail, and networking to attract new employers and retain existing ones.
  • Consultation & Advising: Helping employers understand how to brand themselves on campus and connect with academic departments.
  • Career Fairs & On-Campus Recruiting: Planning layouts, logistics, staffing, and employer visits for events like Career Day and Internship Fairs.
  • Interview Scheduling: Coordinating interview dates, room reservations, student sign-ups, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Workshop Facilitation: Organizing and leading career-related workshops and presentations for students.
  • Statistical Analysis: Collecting and analyzing data on employer engagement and recruitment outcomes to inform strategy and reporting.
  • Verbal and Written Communication: Clear, professional communication with employers, students, and university departments; ability to prepare reports, employment correspondence, and presentations
  • Team Collaboration: Working with career center staff, volunteers, and university partners to deliver successful programming.
  • Career Advising: ability to assist students with career planning, decision-making, goal-setting, job search strategies, researching, and graduate admissions processes

Examples of Work Performed

  • There is no "typical" day in the Career Center; however daily activities could consist contacting employers to initiate relationships as a recruiting partner for interships and full-time career opportunities for currently enrolled students; scheduled appointments to meet with Employers to discuss recruiting options on campus and/or site visits to employer locations.

  • The Recruitiing Coordinator, as liaison to assigned academic departments, will also provide personalized guidance related to a client's career aspirations, exploring career options, discussing job and internship opportunities, reviewing resumes, conducting mock interviews, and coaching clients on how to research employment opportunities.

  • The Recruiting Coordinator has the primary responsiblitly becoming the subject matter expert to manage the Handshake Career Resource Management platform, including job postings, on-campus interview schedules, career advising appointment blocks for staff, etc.

  • The Recruiting Coordinator will also facilitate workshops on topics like job searching/networking, LinkedIn optimization, and how to search for internships.

  • This individual will also be responsible for supervising one Graduate Assistant, planning and executing employer-related events, and providing support for large-scale career expos.

  • The Recruiting Coordinator should be familiar with industry trends or specific fields of interest pertaining to the career communities for which they are assigned.

  • The Recruiting Coordinator will also need to dedicate time to build connections with employers, faculty and university staff to develop partnerships and to source opportunities for students. This will involve sending emails, making calls, and organizing and/or attending networking events.

  • The Recruiting Coordinator will be responsible for developing new programs to support client or academic department needs, updating Handshake resource materials, and analyzing data from surveys or conducting qualitative reviews to improve service offerings.


There may be times when the Recruiting will have to set up events before hours, or facilitate workshops or attend networking events after hours. Flexibility is essential, as no two days are alike for the Career Center team, and this is what makes the Career Center an exciting place to work.


Success will be measured based on the Recruiting Coordinator's ability to relate well to clients, to build effective relationships with the Career Center team and their stakeholders, to reach or exceed metrics as outlined in strategic planning initiatives, complete tasks and accomplish goals within projected time frames, receive positive evaluations from supervisors, peers, and clients, and develop strong collaborations with campus and external partners. In addition, success will be measured by the Recruiting Coordinator's personal growth in developing new skills, innovation, taking on challenges, and growing within the role.


Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Counsels and advises students and recent alumni individually and in groups about career exploration, self-assessment, and career decisions.
2. Serves as the main point of contact for prospective employers providing advice and information about recruitment, engagement and hiring students, and addressing employer needs.
3. Provides students information about career planning and employment opportunities and coaches students through the recruiting process.
4. Schedules logistics and secures resources for on-campus recruiting activities.
5. Delivers presentations and workshops for academic departments and student organizations to increase student interest in employee recruiting programs.

Preferred Qualifications

The University of Mississippi Career Center seeks qualified applicants for the Recruiting Coordinator position. Essential duties include coordination of the on-campus recruiting program, including interview scheduling and job/internship postings. The incumbent serves as the primary liaison between employers, staff, and students in the on-campus recruiting process; assists in creating effective recruiting programs; conducts outreach activities, including workshops and presentations and provides consultation and assistance to students in the execution of job search strategies, employment correspondence development, on-campus recruiting orientation, employment trends, internships, and interview preparation. Supervises the Internship Graduate Assistant; assists other staff in planning and implementing large and small events; disseminates information to academic and administrative offices on campus to increase awareness of the programs and services offered by the Career Center. The incumbent should be able to learn, use, and teach others to use Career Resource Management and other technological platforms. Reports to the Associate Director for Employer Services.


  • The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree and (3) years of experience in a related field.
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Experience in consumer care and in planning small and large events is necessary.
  • Candidates must possess the ability to prioritize, coordinate, and implement multiple projects, maintaining tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data analytics and computer technology to prepare reports, correspondence, and to create and maintain databases is necessary.
  • Knowledge of career resource management platforms (i.e. Handshake, Symplicity, etc.) and recruiting software is helpful.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with a multifaceted and integrative population and within a dynamic team environment.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours during peak times of the fall and spring semesters.
