The emergency and non-emergency Medical Services Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating and managing patient transport requests to ensure safe, timely, and efficient movement of patients across the healthcare system and community. This role serves as a critical communication hub between clinical teams, transport crews, patients, and external partners.

The Dispatcher prioritizes transport requests based on clinical urgency, resource availability, and operational efficiency while maintaining a high standard of customer service and patient-centered care. Responsibilities include scheduling transports, assigning appropriate vehicles and crew configurations (wheelchair, stretcher, secured transport, BLS, ALS, specialty care), monitoring unit status, and providing real-time updates to stakeholders.

The Dispatcher plays a vital role in supporting patient flow, reducing delays in care, and ensuring the safe and appropriate transport of all patients, including those requiring specialized handling such as behavioral health or high acuity patients.

  • THIS IS A NEWLY CREATED POSITION AND DEPARTMENT. Be part of a new service team.

Schedule: 3 - 12 hour shifts. 7:45am-8:15pm, including rotational Saturdays. Currently - no Sundays!

Responsibilities And Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborates with field operations and clinical departments to optimize work flows and patient experience.
  • Triage and prioritize requests based on medical necessity and time lines.
  • Assigns appropriate transport resources (NEMT, Secured Van, BLS, ALS, Specialty Care)
  • Monitors continuous communication with field crews and healthcare teams.
  • Models' effective problem solving and conflict resolution practices.
  • Verify patient readiness and special equipment for transport to minimize delays.
  • Communicate special handling or infection control requirements with drivers.
  • Complete administrative assignments assigned for regulatory and billing compliance.
  • Verify trip eligibility, authorizations, and payer requirements when applicable.
  • Communicate changes or delays with field crews and customers.
  • Optimize routes and schedules to ensure efficiency and on-time performance.
  • Monitor active trips and adjust assignments as needed.
  • Handles stress well and gets along with others within the workplace and with customers.
  • Ensure Compliance with safety, regulatory, and organizational standards.
  • Supports and reinforces a culture of safety, excellence, and just culture principles among the team.
  • Proficiency with dispatching and scheduling software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education And Experience

  • High School Graduate

Preferred Education And Experience

  • 1 or more years Experience in dispatching OR
  • 1 or more years Customer service

Required Language Skills

  • Fluent English -

Knowledge Requirements

  • Basic understanding of EMS system design
  • Common medical terminology
