What are the responsibilities and job description for the PA/ARNP Hospitalist- Ortho Hand Service- Medical Center North Liberty position at The University of Iowa?
The APP will work collaboratively with other APPs, residents, and hand surgeons within the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. The APP will be expected to provide outstanding care to patients in the surgical and outpatient settings. Clinical duties include seeing new, return, and post-operative patients in addition to preforming preoperative physical examinations. No call is expected with this role.
Outpatient orthopedic care: Evaluate and manage patients with hand and/or upper extremity injury or pain. This includes seeing new and return patients, performing examinations, providing treatment, and following patients independently. When needed, the APP would refer to surgical colleagues. This would also include seeing surgical patients throughout the pre- and post-operative continuum.
Fracture and injury management: Independently evaluate and manage acute and subacute fractures, as well as other hand and upper-extremity injuries and pain. Triage hand referrals appropriately for the team.
Point-of-care ultrasound and injections: Utilize her ultrasound expertise to expand our ability to provide point-of-care ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections within the orthopedic clinic.
Procedures: support a high volume of procedures performed under local anesthesia, including trigger finger, Dupuytren’s contracture, and carpal tunnel procedures. Potential to assist with fracture reductions under procedural sedation.
Operating room support: Serve as a first assist for more complex orthopedic cases, utilizing her surgical background to support surgeons in the OR.
Expanded procedural capacity: Her combination of surgical, procedural, and ultrasound skills would allow us to broaden the services we provide within orthopedics, improve access to care, and manage a greater volume of patients and procedures.

ARNP: A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree or DNP in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required. Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
PA: Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Associate Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. A Master’s degree is highly desired.
Experience Required:
- 3-5 years of patient care experience gained through education, job experience, or rotations is required
- Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of orthopedic patient care is required
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of background and perspectives
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- 1-3 years of experience as 1st assist in the operating room
