High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 2 years experience in low installation and repair; BICSI training

Position Summary

Perform routine telecommunications cabling activities including job site preparation; creating cable pathways; installing twisted pair, fiber, and coax cable; terminating twisted pair, fiber, and coax cable; installing racks and other equipment in telecommunications closets; testing and certifying cable installations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies

Installation and termination of twisted pair cable; ability to climb ladders and perform overhead work; ability to operate hand tools.

Physical Demands

Lift 50 lbs, climb ladders and perform overhead work, operate hand tools and power tools, work in small spaces (crawlspaces, attics, maintenance holes); operate hand tools. Driving.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Install hardware systems such as ladder racks, J-hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls.
  • Pull telecommunications cabling through the wide variety of building architectures (both old and new) found on the University of Georgia main campus and other UGA-owned and leased locations. Building pulls include both vertical (riser) and horizontal runs.
  • Use industry standard methods for organizing cable runs to ensure the cables are grouped according to destination.
  • Carefully dress cable bundle to assure all cables are routed in a neat, orderly appearance. Properly label the cables at both work area and wiring closet.
  • Utilize industry standard techniques for determining the length of cable needed to reach the point of termination to ensure sufficient slack for re-terminating, if necessary, and to provide adequate strain relief.
  • Employ and ensure that all applicable ANSI/EIA/TIA standards or manufacturer recommended techniques for accomplishing the termination types are used.
  • Install work area outlets that enable connection of the customer’s equipment to the building telecommunications network.
  • Test, certify and troubleshoot copper, fiber optic and wireless networks using appropriate test equipment.

  • Prepare telecommunications rooms (Main Distribution Frames-MDF and Intermediate Distribution Frames-IDF) in UGA buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks.
  • Implement firestopping techniques when appropriate for telecommunications cabling installations.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

  • At the discretion of the Section Manager, the Telecommunications Installation Professional Associate may be asked to supervise the efforts of assigned team members in the performance of telecommunications cabling installation assignments.
  • Will be responsible for directing all phases of the telecommunications cabling installation projects to include the safety, labor, and material requirements for the job; informs team members of their specific assignments for the installation task; makes arrangements to obtain all necessary materials for the task; oversees and helps execute the assigned network cabling job; and directs the evaluation of network integrity after the installation task is complete.
  • Keep the management team updated on the progress of assigned installation projects; seeks the approval of the customer and the management team before proceeding with changes or upgrades to original installation plans.
  • Provides the management team with a detailed status on assigned network cabling tasks at the end of the workday to include the estimated number of days or man hours needed to complete the job; specifics on any change orders desired by the customer and/or mandated by the job; and the need for any additional personnel or material resources.
