Medical Malpractice Paralegal/ Legal Assistant

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical Malpractice Paralegal to support our attorneys through every stage of complex medical negligence litigation, from initial intake and medical review panel proceedings through trial. This role is central to how our cases get built. We are looking for someone detail-orientated and self-directed.

Responsibilities

Case Intake & Louisiana Medical Review Panel Practice

  • Conduct initial client intake interviews and prepare case summaries for attorney review
  • Prepare and file requests for medical review panel with the Louisiana Division of Administration under the Medical Malpractice Act (La. R.S. 40:1231.8)
  • Verify provider qualification status with the Patient's Compensation Fund
  • Track panel formation, attorney chair selection, panelist selection, and submission deadlines
  • Calendar and monitor Louisiana's one-year prescriptive period, the three-year period of repose, and all suspension periods triggered by panel proceedings

Medical Records & Chronologies

  • Request, track, and audit medical records from providers, hospitals, pharmacies, and imaging centers
  • Identify gaps, duplicates, and missing records; follow up persistently until productions are complete
  • Draft HIPAA-compliant authorizations and manage records custodian correspondence
  • Organize, Bates-label, index, and OCR large record productions
  • Compile medical billing summaries and calculate special damages

Discovery & Litigation Support

  • Draft petitions, discovery requests, responses, subpoenas, and routine correspondence
  • Assist with document review and production, including privilege log preparation
  • Summarize depositions and prepare deposition exhibits and outlines
  • Manage e-filing in Louisiana district courts, the courts of appeal, and federal court if required.

Experts & Trial Preparation

  • Coordinate with retained and testifying experts, including scheduling, record transmittal, and CV/fee tracking
  • Assist in preparing expert reports, affidavits, and disclosures
  • Build trial notebooks, exhibit lists, witness lists, and demonstrative aids
  • Provide on-site trial and mediation support as needed

Client & Third-Party Communication

  • Serve as a consistent point of contact for clients, providing status updates with professionalism and empathy
  • Coordinate with lien holders, health insurers, Medicare/Medicaid, and workers' compensation carriers on lien identification and resolution

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically:
  • Word — styles, formatting, tables of contents, track changes, and document comparison
  • Excel — records tracking logs, billing and damages summaries, sorting/filtering, basic formulas
  • Outlook — calendaring, deadline management, and high-volume correspondence
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro proficiency (Bates numbering, OCR, redaction, splitting and combining large PDFs)
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines independently in a high-volume caseload

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Filevine case management software, preferred but not required; we will train the right candidate
  • Direct experience with Louisiana medical review panel practice and Patient's Compensation Fund procedures

Pay: From $14.42 per hour
