JOB TITLE: UTILITY WORKER I/II

The Town of Centreville is seeking a skilled and motivated Utility Worker I or II to join the Department of Public Works. This position performs work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water and sewer systems, streets, and storm drains, while assisting in leading work crews and supporting daily public works operations.

Job Description:

This is semi-skilled work in the Town of Centreville. An employee in this class works with general supervision from the Public Works Utility Supervisor and assists other members of the Public Works Department in the maintenance of the Town’s streets, lawns, parks, water lines and sewer mains. Work is reviewed while in progress.

Essential Duties:

•    Maintains streets by sweeping, fixing pot holes, painting crossings and parking lines, operates a tractor mounted power broom, pick and shovel.
•    Installs traffic control, directional and informational signs; paints curbs and posts using brush and rollers.
•    Operates a medium weight truck and performs preventive maintenance; picks up bulk trash on designated days.
•    Assists in the repair of water main breaks and water leaks; in the alleviation of sewer line stoppage using such equipment as a sewer rodder; ditch pump and hand tools.
•    Digs and clears trenches with hand tools; mows grass and trims hedges; shovels snow and spreads salt. Performs other duties as required.
•    Maintain the appearance of the assigned vehicle and perform minor maintenance functions such as changing oil, lubricating, changing oil and air filter, watching oil levels in engines and gear cases and replacing fuses and bulbs.
•    Must be able to climb into and out of ditches.
•    Possess the willingness and ability to adhere to both written and oral instructions; must be dependable and punctual.
•    Possess sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand technical manuals.
•    Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

•    Graduation from an accredited high school or GED is preferred.
•    A minimum of six months experience is preferred.
OR
 Any equivalent combination of education and directly related experience will be considered.

•    Applicants should hold working knowledge of the operation of trucks, the care and routine maintenance of such vehicles and gasoline engines; traffic regulations of the State of Maryland; safe operating limits of the operated vehicle, operation of an air compressor, air hammer, wacker, tamper and tapping machine.
•    Ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical examination within 30 days after employment and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.

Additional Information:

•    Additional skills in the operation of a medium weight truck, back hoe, sewer rod, trencher, jackhammer, tar port, and with hand tools a plus.

Hiring Level:
Candidates may be hired as Utility Worker I or II depending on experience, certifications, and qualifications.
