Overview
The Spence School seeks a dynamic scholar-practitioner to join a collaborative and forward-thinking Modern and Classical Languages Department. We are looking for a French educator who possesses a deep love for the language and a nuanced understanding of the developmental needs of students in Grades 5–8.
At Spence, we view French not merely as a linguistic exercise, but as a gateway to understanding the vast diversity of the Francophone world. The ideal candidate will foster an inclusive, high-energy classroom environment where students feel empowered to take intellectual risks and develop a genuine passion for global citizenship.

Responsibilities
●    Teach introductory through intermediate French, employing both traditional and innovative pedagogies to engage middle school learners.
●    Collaborate within teaching teams to design assessments and methods that ensure a seamless transition from Middle to Upper School.
●    Weave the history, culture, and current events of the Francophonie into the curriculum, encouraging students to engage critically with the successes and challenges of the modern Francophone world.
●    Actively participate in department and school-wide initiatives centered on equity, pedagogy, and curricular innovation.
●    Serve as a Middle School Advisor (if full-time), acting as the primary advocate for a small cohort of students and a partner to their families regarding academic and social-emotional growth.

• A work ethic defined by energy, kindness, maturity, curiosity, flexibility, and a sense of humor.
• A belief that collaboration is essential to professional growth and a desire to work closely with colleagues.
• Sustained teaching experience with a proven track record of engaging and inspiring middle school-aged learners.
• Native or near-native proficiency in French.
• A Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in French, French Studies, or a related field.
