The Salvation Army has an opening for a “Divisional Planned Giving Director” in the Potomac Division, which includes Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC.

Key responsibilities:

The Divisional Planned Giving Director (Legacy and Estate Planning) position will be responsible for engaging The Salvation Army’s donors in planned and deferred gifts, with responsibility for identifying prospects, designing, and implementing gift planning strategies, providing guidance in gift structures that achieve donor’s goals and stewardship of donors with deferred gift commitments, and lead the marketing program for the gift planning team. The Director will manage a small portfolio of donors and lead the gift planning team (five associate planned giving directors around the state division and one support staff) while providing gift planning expertise for the team.

  • Plans, develops, coordinates, administers, and supervises all phases of a Planned Giving Program for one of eight Divisions throughout the Territory.
  • Leads and supervises five Associate Planned Giving Directors and support staff with the responsibilities of soliciting and securing planned gifts throughout division; instructs and trains staff on the proper methods and procedures; monitors work for compliance, coaches, and trains staff.
  • Reviews, accepts, and submits all gift documentation and donor agreements including (wills, trusts, gift annuities, pooled income funds, IRA designations, Donor Advised Funds funded with gifts of stocks and property.
  • Comply with all reporting requirements.
  • Donor development and relationship responsibilities.
  • Travel often throughout the division (Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC) and to occasional conferences nationally is required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Manual dexterity.  Ability to sit, walk, and stand on a frequent change basis in order to perform the duties of this position.  Ability to lift objects weighing between 25-50 lbs.  Ability to travel throughout the Division, by automobile, on a regular basis to work with donors/prospects, and professionals in their communities. Travel may include overnight trips; Travel requirements may be up to 60% of work time.

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.  Work is also performed in a home office setting, and, in a variety of multiple Corps and Area Command offices.

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience in planned giving fundraising in a charitable organization and 2 years’ supervisory experience and A Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year accredited college or university OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of best practices in planned giving, including all relevant rules, regulations, programs, and policies for meeting compliance with a variety of planned giving vehicles.
  • Affinity for the mission of a worthwhile Christian cause.
  • Ideal candidate to reside in the Washington, DC metro area, northern Virginia, or suburban Maryland for public presentations.

License/Certifications

Valid State Driver’s License

Bona-fide Occupational Qualification (BFOQ)

This position requires an active Christian faith in harmony with Salvation Army doctrine and practice.
