Job Overview

The Director, Planned Giving in the Office of Advancement at Georgetown University is responsible for providing planned giving services throughout the University, including the main campus and medical center. There is a strong emphasis on documentation of leadership annual fund planned gifts to build a strong financial foundation for the University through philanthropy. This role also provides counsel to fundraisers throughout the organization to facilitate their engagement with donors in their respective units or areas. The Director provides counsel on technical areas such as estate and wealth planning, tax, liquid or hard-to-value assets, complex charitable giving vehicles and structures, and the financial and personal issues affecting wealthy families. Additionally, this role will support development officers when prospective donors may be considering or have the potential for gift planning as an avenue for contributing to the University.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Planned giving cultivation and documentation.
  • Estate administration and life income program management.
  • Planned giving training and education

Work Interactions

This position will report to either the Assistant Vice President & Chief of Staff or the Associate Vice President, Regional Development, and work with members of the Planned Giving Operations team and the Senior Philanthropic Advisor for Planned Giving. Collaboration and a positive work relationship with development officers and schools/units to develop gift planning strategies for individuals with the capability of making gifts will be critical for success. This role will also work with members of the University’s administration, staff, and faculty, engage with external constituents, such as attorneys, accountants, trust officers, financial advisors, to provide planned giving information, and may engage with prospective donors.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate required
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of overall professional experience with at least 5 years of professional experience in Planned Giving or estate and trust administration
  • Experience with documenting bequests and reviewing planned giving legal documents
  • Working knowledge of the legal, tax, and procedural aspects of estate planning, estate administration, fiduciary responsibilities, estate and trust tax preparation, and accounting required
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with corporate and individual fiduciaries as well as accountants, financial custodians, surviving family members, and key internal partners within the University
  • Strong verbal and writing skills, high attention to detail and follow-up, and excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion and tact
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Exceptional work ethic and track record of personal initiative
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills characterized by the ability to listen, speak and write well
  • Flexibility and adaptability to new programs in an emerging and changing environment
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Advancement, including internal databases and Microsoft Office programs

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$135,188.00 - $264,291.85

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
