Summary: The Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) shares the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal’s (RCCR) commitment to recovery, housing stability, and community reintegration and works within the Samaritan Inn, a WVARR-Certified Level II Recovery Residence for adult men. This grant-funded position provides structured, peer-led recovery support grounded in lived experience and evidence-based recovery principles. The PRSS supports residents transitioning from homelessness, treatment, incarceration, or other high-risk environments into stable recovery, housing, employment, and community connection. Responsibilities include peer mentorship, recovery planning, life skills support, coordination with the continuum of care, documentation, and compliance with WVARR, NARR, SAMHSA, and Opioid Abatement requirements. This position directly supports opioid overdose prevention, relapse reduction, and recidivism reduction by addressing housing instability, lack of recovery support, and disconnection from healthcare and employment.
Primary Responsibilities
Peer Recovery Support & Engagement
· Provide daily, recovery-oriented peer support grounded in lived experience
· Welcome, orient, and engage residents upon entry into the recovery residence
· Model recovery-supportive behaviors consistent with SAMHSA recovery principles
· Maintain ethical peer boundaries in accordance with NARR and WVARR standards
· Foster a safe, respectful, and recovery-focused residential environment
Intake, Assessment & Recovery Planning
· Assist with interviews intake, program orientation, and eligibility verification
· Support residents in developing individualized, self-directed recovery plans
· Conduct Recovery Capital assessments using validated tools
· Support goal setting related to housing stability, employment, health engagement, and community integration
· Monitor progress toward recovery and housing milestones and adjust support as needed
Continuum of Care Coordination
· Support access to healthcare and behavioral health services, including primary care, mental health services, and MOUD/MAT/MAR as clinically indicated
· Coordinate with treatment providers, probation/parole, reentry services, workforce programs, and recovery networks
· Facilitate smooth transitions across stages of recovery to reduce relapse, overdose, and recidivism risk
· Serve as a liaison between residents and external partners to support continuity of care
Life Skills, Employment & Stability Supports
· Support development of independent living skills, including relapse prevention, coping strategies, household management, and nutrition
· Assist residents with employment readiness, job search, and vocational engagement
· Promote accountability, responsibility, and community contribution consistent with Level II recovery housing expectations
· Encourage participation in peer support groups and mutual-aid meetings using multiple recovery pathways
Documentation, Compliance & Administrative Duties
· Maintain timely and accurate documentation consistent with WVARR, NARR, SAMHSA, and Opioid Abatement reporting requirements
· Complete case notes, recovery plans, assessments, and outcome tracking as required
· Support collection and reporting of quantitative and qualitative outcome data
· Participate in supervision, training, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement activities
· Adhere to RCCR policies, confidentiality standards, and ethical guidelines
Qualifications
Required
· Lived experience in recovery from substance use disorder
· Current certification as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist
· Knowledge of recovery-oriented systems of care, trauma-informed practices, and harm reduction principles
· Ability to engage individuals who are justice-involved, housing-insecure, or transitioning from treatment
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
Preferred
· Experience working in recovery housing or residential programs
· Familiarity with NARR, WVARR, and SAMHSA standards
· Experience supporting individuals with opioid use disorder and co-occurring conditions
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
· Work is conducted fully in person at the Samaritan Inn, 1117 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV
· Must be able to walk, stand, bend, lift, and remain engaged in a residential setting
· Occasional non-traditional hours (morning or evening) based on program needs
· Ability to respond calmly and professionally in high-stress or crisis situations
Position Status, Schedule & Compensation
· Part-time: 20–24 hours per week
· Hourly Rate: $18–$21 per hour, commensurate with experience and certification
· This role may require limited non-traditional hours (mornings or evenings). The weekly schedule will be determined collaboratively at hire based on program needs and candidate availability, then remain consistent week to support participant access, safety, and program continuity.
