NATA definition of Athletic Trainer: Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified multi-skilled healthcare professionals who render service or treatment, under direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations.
The Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer defines an Athletic Trainer's scope of practice as providing care for musculoskeletal conditions under the direction of a physician and encompasses injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion, emergent care, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation. The Athletic Trainers scope of practice emphasizes evidence-based practice, patient-centered care and interprofessional collaboration (bocatc.org) while also ensuring the Athletic Trainer possesses the knowledge, clinical judgement and technical skills required for safe, effective practice (nata.org)

Within the ambulatory environment, ATCs are essential members of the care team-supporting efficient clinic flow, optimizing patient readiness, and enhancing access and quality across multiple specialties.
