Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP)- Cancer Emergency Response Team

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 10/22/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/21/2026

Bring advanced clinical judgment to a role where oncology same-day care and emergency response intersect. As an Advanced Practice Provider on UVA Cancer Emergency Response Team, known as CERT, you will evaluate complex presentations, manage urgent clinical needs, and provide stability for patients during critical moments in their cancer care.

This full-time outpatient opportunity offers an uncommon combination of APP autonomy, interdisciplinary support, and broad oncology and hematology exposure. You will practice independently while working alongside experienced APPs, physicians, nurses, and specialty teams committed to coordinated, patient-centered care.

The position follows a four-day, 10-hour shift schedule in an outpatient setting with no overnight shifts. Weekend and holiday rotations, along with some call responsibilities, are required.

The Role

CERT provides emergency response within the oncology infusion and same-day clinic environment. In this role, you will care for established oncology and hematology patients while responding to infusion reactions, acute changes in condition, and emergencies within UVA Health cancer facilities. Your work will shift between planned same-day evaluations and time-sensitive infusion situations. Strong pattern recognition, assessment skills, and professional composure will be essential as you determine appropriate interventions, coordinate specialty consultation, and stabilize patients when escalation is required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate and treat acute and chronic Oncology/Hematology
  • Respond to infusion-related reactions and oncology emergencies.
  • Assess, stabilize, and triage patients until emergency medical services arrive when needed.
  • Develop clinical plans for established oncology and hematology patients with complex presentations.
  • Coordinate care with referring oncologists, physician collaborators, specialty providers, triage nurses, infusion nurses, and support staff.
  • Practice with significant clinical independence while remaining connected to a strong consultation network.

Primary practice locations are the Emily Couric Cancer Center and Cancer Center Pantops in Charlottesville. Cross-training across both locations provides additional clinical variety and familiarity with different oncology workflows.

A comprehensive orientation is tailored to your background and learning needs. The onboarding period generally ranges from 8 to 16 weeks, with ongoing oncology and hematology education. Oncology experience is highly valued, but APPs with acute care, emergency response, complex patient care, or independent practice experience may also bring a strong foundation to this opportunity.
