Working Construction Foreman

The Premier Companies
Fairfield, IA Full Time | Contractor
POSTED ON 9/9/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/7/2027

Premier Construction is seeking a Working Construction Foreman to lead and work alongside our existing two-person field crew throughout Fairfield and Southeast Iowa.

This is a hands-on leadership position. We need someone who naturally leads, thinks ahead, solves problems, recognizes quality workmanship, and actively teaches the employees working alongside them.

Our projects vary and may include:

- Residential and commercial remodeling
- Framing and carpentry
- Decks
- Siding
- Windows and doors
- Drywall
- Flooring
- Painting
- Repairs and exterior improvements
- General construction

You do not need to be a master of every trade. We care more about broad construction knowledge, good judgment, problem-solving ability, willingness to learn, and having a strong eye for what professional-quality finished work should look like.

Responsibilities

- Lead and work alongside a two-person construction crew.
- Review project scopes and manage field progress through Trello.
- Plan and sequence daily work to keep projects and the crew productive.
- Actively teach and develop other employees rather than simply performing difficult tasks yourself.
- Handle routine field questions and construction problems without constant owner involvement.
- Maintain Premier Construction's quality and workmanship standards throughout each project.
- Perform final quality-control inspections and ensure deficiencies are corrected before completion.
- Take and upload before, progress, and completion photos.
- Document unforeseen conditions, measurements, additional work, and important project notes for owner review.
- Think ahead and recommend schedule adjustments when moving between active projects would improve efficiency.
- Oversee incidental material purchases made by crew members.
- Ensure company trucks, trailers, tools, equipment, and jobsites remain clean, organized, accounted for, and ready for work.
- Maintain reasonable jobsite safety practices.
- Manage normal day-to-day crew direction, productivity, and attendance communication.
- Lead a brief end-of-day planning discussion covering the next day's project, goals, responsibilities, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Complete project closeout and notify the owner when work has passed QC, documentation is complete, and the project is ready to invoice.

Leadership & Training

A major responsibility of this position is making the people working alongside you better.

We are not looking for someone who performs every difficult task themselves because it is faster.

The right foreman should be willing and able to:

- Demonstrate unfamiliar work.
- Explain how and why a task should be completed.
- Allow crew members to perform the work under supervision.
- Correct mistakes and teach the proper method.
- Progressively develop a more knowledgeable, capable, and independent crew.

What We're Looking For

- Broad, hands-on construction experience.
- General understanding of how different trades and building systems work together.
- Strong eye for workmanship and finished quality.
- Natural leadership, initiative, and accountability.
- Ability and willingness to teach others.
- Strong practical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar products and installation methods.
- Good judgment about what can be handled independently and what needs owner involvement.
- Dependable and organized.
- Comfortable taking responsibility for a crew and active projects.
- Comfortable using a smartphone and applications such as Trello.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Prior foreman or crew-lead experience is strongly preferred, although demonstrated leadership ability is more important than a previous job title.

Compensation & Evaluation

- Regular Working Foreman starting wage: $23–$25/hour, based on experience and demonstrated capability.
- Selected candidates begin with a paid 1–2 week working evaluation at $20/hour alongside our existing crew.
- The working evaluation allows both sides to evaluate hands-on ability, leadership, workmanship, communication, problem-solving, and crew fit in an actual jobsite environment.
- Successful candidates transition to the $23–$25/hour Working Foreman rate.
- The position then continues through a 90-day introductory evaluation period while the foreman learns our crew, projects, quality standards, Trello workflow, and operating procedures.
- Additional compensation and responsibility are available as the individual grows into the position and the company continues to expand.

What Success Looks Like

We are looking for someone who can take ownership of normal field operations so the crew can work efficiently, solve routine problems, maintain our quality standards, and complete projects without requiring constant owner supervision.

If you want to work, lead, teach, take ownership, and help build a stronger crew, we encourage you to apply.
