About The Barred Academy

At The Barred Academy, we do things differently—because our students do. We’re on a mission to empower neurodiverse learners through personalized, evidence-based instruction in a nurturing, whole-child environment. We use creative, multi-sensory teaching methods to unlock potential and build confidence in every student. We’re not just a school—we’re a community of educators, learners, and families working together to reimagine what’s possible in education. If you're passionate about equity in learning and thrive in a collaborative, mission-driven environment, we want you on our team.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Paraprofessional with a passion for supporting the unique nervous system needs of a group of neurodiverse learners in order to support their access to all aspects of their school day.

In this role, you aren’t just an assistant—you are a vital partner within the school community. Working side-by-side with the team, you will monitor student engagement, emotional regulation, and behavioral needs in order to provide assistance with accessing our sensory centers, outside regulation tools, or calming centers. Additionally, you will provide students ongoing, in the moment, conflict resolution support through a collaborative problem solving approach. You’ll be a key contributor to our close-knit community, helping to ensure every student feels safe, valued, and heard.

What You'll Do

Instruction & Student Engagement

  • Offer supportive, neuroaffirming guidance in the moment to help students navigate social dynamics, collaborative work, and emotional regulation.

Team Collaboration & Support

  • Partner seamlessly with the team to implement academic and behavioral support according to student needs and team consensus.
  • Be a proactive communicator, sharing daily insights and observations about student progress and engagement
  • Bring a collaborative spirit to team meetings by being open to, and giving, feedback with the objective of continuous improvement individually, and for the school program as a whole.

Learning Environment & Culture

  • Help maintain a calm, structured, and predictable environment where neurodiverse students feel secure.
  • Assist with classroom flow and transition management, ensuring that group activities and movements between spaces are safe, regulated, and focused.
  • Engage directly with students during recess and movement breaks, actively modeling and promoting collaborative problem solving, social thinking, social problem solving, self-awareness, and self-control.
  • Help set up and actively support staff and students throughout community milestone events like the Moving On Ceremony and Exhibition Day.

What Success Looks Like

  • Students feel consistently safe, understood, and supported as they take academic, social, and emotional risks.
  • The classroom flows smoothly because you and the team seamlessly communicate and collaborate.
  • You are recognized as a reliable team player who brings positive energy and steady patience to every challenge.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required (Associate’s degree or passing score on the ParaEducator assessment preferred).
  • Experience working with neurodiverse children (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc.) in an educational, therapeutic, or recreational setting is highly valued.
  • A deep understanding of nervous system regulation needs, strategies, and tools for support.
  • Comfort implementing physical activities and engaging in physically demanding tasks to support student regulation.
  • A naturally patient, neuroaffirming approach to a variety of social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
