Public Safety Communications Supervisor

This position provides day-to-day oversight of Public Safety Dispatchers, Alarm and Video Monitoring Specialists and student support staff. Supervises and directs subordinate staff which includes assigning and delegating work projects and scheduling employees to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained. Also responsible for all aspects of the performance management process for subordinate employees including evaluating work performance, providing coaching and mentoring and implementing corrective action for performance and conduct related issues.

The Communications Supervisor also provides technical assistance to staff, resolves work or personnel related issues and i dentifies training needs for Communications Center staff on the use of dispatching and video/alarm monitoring equipment, LEADS, and other technologies /policies/directives/procedures impacting the operations of the division. This position works under the general supervision of the Senior Dispatch Communications Supervisor and assists with defining objectives, priorities and deadlines and provides input on unusual situations or problems with no clear precedent. Supervisors plan and carry out their work independently but are expected to resolve issues in accordance with instructions, policies, procedures and applicable laws and regulations.

The Communications Supervisor is expected to be able to perform the full range of Public Safety Dispatcher and Alarm Video Monitoring Specialist (AVM) functions and to do so on an as needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 3 years of relevant experience required. 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability required to successfully perform the duties of the position. Bachelor’s degree desired. Minimum of at least three years of progressively responsible communications dispatching experience in a comparable public safety-dispatching center. Experience with state laws and regulations regarding Communication Center activities is required. Minimum two years’ experience with CAD, E911, Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), and other security technology equipment is required. 12- months experience supervising employees or a recent work history of taking on and successfully performing progressively increased responsibilities is desired. Experience or other qualifications that demonstrate strong decision-making skills, excellent interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills, and an ability to successfully supervise, motivate, mentor, train and evaluate assigned staff is desired.

Upon completion of the probationary period the selected candidate must meet the following expectations :

  • Understand techniques, procedures and methods used in the operations of a public safety communications center.
  • Become adept using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), enhanced 9-1-1 equipment, Video Surveillance, Alarm, and Mass Notification systems.
  • Have general knowledge of the Ohio State University campus geography and locations of highways, main streets and buildings.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication methods and techniques, including conflict resolution and general mediation techniques.
  • Receive a FAA Part 107 drone license.
  • Apply a high level of initiative, discretion, and judgment in accomplishing the work.
  • Perform work under stressful or emotional conditions.

Unusual Working Conditions

Subject to 24-hour call in. May be assigned to work any shift, including days, evenings, nights, or swing shifts. May work weekends and holidays. Required to work all home football games and other significant campus events.

This position is identified as an Essential position, whose presence is required regardless of the existence of an emergency condition, and whose absence from duty could endanger the safety and well-being of the campus population and/or physical plant.

Additional Information:

The target hiring rate for this position is $41.77 per hour.
