We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Certified Teacher's Aide to join our team at The New York Institute for Special Education. In this role, you will support teachers in delivering tailored educational experiences to students with special needs, ensuring their academic and personal growth in a supportive environment.
The Readiness Program is a full-day, center-based preschool program for children ages 3 to 5 who reside in the Bronx and are grouped in small classes with a teacher and two teacher assistants. All preschoolers have been referred to the program through their local Committee on Preschool Special Education, and display one or more of the following:
Adaptive Developmental Delays
- Cognitive, Speech, and/or Language Delays
- Fine and/or Gross Motor Skill Delays
- Sensory Integration Delays
- Social-Emotional Development Delays
- Visual Impairments/Blindness
This position pays $30,000(starting) for a 10-month contract(for a certified TA). And, while it's not required, the expectation is for this person to work our summer program as we have the same number of students as in the regular school year. The summer program(which is six (6) weeks long) is paid as an additional amount for those weeks, based on your salary. Total compensation for the first year is approximately $35,000.

Job Expectations:
- Assist in planning, preparing, and implementing the daily program under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Assist in planning and preparing the classroom environment, setting up and preparing needed materials and supplies for the daily activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Prepare teaching materials and aids as directed by the teacher.
- Supervise the students and classroom activities in the absence of the teacher.
- Assist with the general housekeeping tasks to maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.
- Observe, record, and report on the behavior of individual children as assigned.
- Assist the children in establishing good health habits of personal hygiene, including but not limited to hand washing, caring for toileting needs, assisting with toilet training, and diaper changing as needed.
- Assist with the record-keeping duties, including attendance taking, notebook check, behavior checklists, filing of staffing reports, health service visit reports, student portfolios, classroom newsletter, and correspondence as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Discuss assigned duties with the teacher to coordinate instructional efforts and address issues and concerns if needed.
- Attend all classroom team meetings and review staffing reports for necessary follow-up.
- Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure understanding of students’ needs in speech, occupational, and physical therapy, as well as behavioral and social-emotional needs of the children.
- Demonstrate understanding of typical child development and the six areas of development as they apply to the student’s growth and development in your care.
- Assist with integrating therapeutic strategies and interventions into the classroom environment and the comprehensive educational plan of the students in your assigned class.
- To actively contribute to team planning and staffing meetings by sharing information with other staff members and using their input to assist with your interaction with the students.
- Follow all procedures and routines of the assigned program and the whole of the
- Institute. To conform to procedures and routines of the Institute, to ensure consistency and continuity of each child’s program.
- To participate in school and community-based professional development activities and to personally be accountable for acquiring 15 hours of staff development hours over 2 years.
- Effectively communicate with administration and team members about issues and concerns in a professional manner.
- Exhibits a mature professional attitude in interactions as evidenced by effective relationships with students’ families and other staff members.
- Maintain confidentiality of students, families, and colleagues at all times.
Physical Requirements:
- Perform duties and responsibilities of the job without physical restrictions.
- Maintain level of activity and physical assistance consistent with the needs of young children with disabilities ranging in age from 3-5, including but not limited to walking, lifting children to 30 pounds onto a changing table, bending and sitting at the child’s level to assist with activities, and helping children on and off playground equipment.
- Sufficient vision and hearing to supervise the needs of the children effectively.
Education, Knowledge, and Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- NYS Teaching Assistant Certificate or pass the NYS Assessment of Teaching
- Experience working with preschool students.
