What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grid Operations Engineer position at The Mosaic Company?
Please Note:
- You are not required to report into a Mosaic office; however, there is travel to client locations
- Geographic flexibility: This position is open to candidates residing anywhere in the US.
Position Overview
The Grid Operations Engineer supports Mosaic’s Grid Operations practice by combining engineering expertise with a talent for translating complex operational concepts into effective training content and technical documentation. This hybrid role bridges the gap between utility control room operations and the engineering disciplines that support them – developing training curricula, supporting technology implementations, and providing technical consulting services to utility clients.
The ideal candidate brings an engineering mindset and utility industry awareness without necessarily having spent a career in the control room. They understand power systems concepts and can convert that knowledge into practical, actionable training programs and technical deliverables that help utility operators and staff perform at a high level.
Roles and Responsibilities
Training Development & Delivery
- Develop, organize, and maintain training content for utility control room operators and support staff, translating engineering concepts into practical, operationally relevant curricula.
- Lead and facilitate training classes, workshops, and knowledge-transfer sessions at client sites, demonstrating strong presentation and classroom facilitation skills.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and client stakeholders to identify training gaps and develop targeted learning objectives.
- Create training materials including instructor guides, participant workbooks, job aids, simulations, and assessment instruments.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and iterate on content based on participant feedback and operational outcomes.
Technical & Engineering Support
- Provide technical consulting in areas such as SCADA/EMS/DMS/ADMS operations, grid reliability, and distribution or transmission operations engineering.
- Support grid operations technology implementations by contributing engineering analysis, requirements development, and process documentation.
- Assess current operational roles, tasks, processes, and procedures; develop recommendations for improvement aligned with industry best practices.
- Translate technical system configurations and operational procedures into clear, accessible documentation for diverse audiences.
- Assist with business process analysis, process mapping, and workflow optimization for grid operations functions.
Client Engagement & Advisory
- Serve as a trusted technical resource to utility clients, building credibility through engineering depth and practical problem-solving.
- Partner with client stakeholders to evaluate and prioritize operational and training challenges.
- Provide relevant, accurate, and concise deliverables aligned with project and business objectives.
- Recommend and support delivery of client solutions including communication plans and presentations.
Internal Development
- Support Mosaic’s Grid Operations and Grid Modernization teams with cross-practice knowledge sharing and lessons learned.
- Contribute to development of reusable content artifacts, templates, and internal process improvements.
- Assist with business development activities including scoping, estimating, and proposal development.
- Adhere to project parameters including scope, assumptions, and project plans to achieve exceptional client results.
To respond to client and project needs effectively, roles and responsibilities can vary and may include additional responsibilities not listed.
Skills and Experience
Required
- Utility industry experience in any engineering, operations support, or technical role (does not need to be direct control room operator experience).
- Familiarity with SCADA, EMS, DMS, ADMS, or similar grid operations technology platforms.
- Engineering mindset – strong analytical and systems-thinking skills with the ability to break down complex technical concepts.
- Strong communication and presentation skills – able to stand up and confidently lead a training class or client workshop.
- Proficiency with standard business tools (MS Office suite, Visio or equivalent diagramming tools).
- A self-starter who thrives in a dynamic, client-facing consulting environment with changing priorities.
- Willingness to travel to client sites as project needs require.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Experience developing or delivering technical training content.
- Background in one or more of the following utility roles: Planning Engineer, Distribution Operations Engineer, Distribution Engineer, Operations Engineer, SCADA Engineer, Reliability Engineer, or similar.
- Familiarity with grid operations processes including switching, outage management, load management, and system restoration.
