Wastewater Operations Supervisor (Overnight Shift)
Location: Fairfax County, Virginia
Schedule: Full-Time | 10-hour overnight shifts (rotating schedule)
Salary: $108,000 – $122,000 annually

Position Overview
Reporting to senior operations leadership, the Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing plant operations staff and ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient performance of a large-scale wastewater treatment facility and related systems.
This role leads a team of operators and technicians, coordinates plant-wide activities, and serves as a key decision-maker during overnight operations, including emergency response situations.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate operations staff across multiple levels
- Develop team schedules, assign workloads, and ensure proper staffing coverage
- Support training initiatives and ensure staff are equipped to operate safely and efficiently
- Step in as acting lead operator when needed
Operations Oversight
- Conduct routine facility rounds to assess performance, safety, and compliance
- Monitor system performance using SCADA and other operational tools
- Troubleshoot operational issues and recommend corrective actions
- Collaborate cross-functionally to maintain uninterrupted plant operations
- Review and update standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Safety & Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure adherence to all safety protocols
- Ensure proper use and maintenance of PPE
- Report and document safety incidents and corrective actions
- Maintain full compliance with all regulatory and permit requirements
Maintenance & Coordination
- Partner with maintenance teams to prioritize and address work orders
- Interpret technical drawings and support staff in understanding system layouts
- Assist with asset management and long-term operational planning
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5 years of experience in advanced wastewater treatment operations
- 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred
- Ability to obtain appropriate state-level wastewater operator certification within 1 year
- Strong knowledge of process control, treatment systems, and regulatory standards
- Familiarity with OSHA safety practices and emergency response procedures
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with operational systems and general computer applications
- Valid driver’s license required
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Combination of indoor and outdoor work in an industrial plant setting
- Exposure to varying temperatures, humidity, and operational environments
- Frequent standing/walking for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 80 pounds occasionally
- Must be able to respond to alarms and communicate effectively in emergency situations
Schedule
- Overnight shift: approximately 9:30 PM – 8:00 AM
- Rotating schedule with most weekends off
- Must be available for weekends, holidays, and emergency response as needed
