What are the responsibilities and job description for the Test Stand Fabricator / Mechanic position at The Malwin Company?
About The Malwin Company
The Malwin Company is an aerospace and defense enterprise that brings together specialized engineering, manufacturing, and technology capabilities under one organization.
Our teams design, develop, manufacture, and support highly specialized products and solutions for demanding aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. We combine deep technical expertise with shared resources, broader opportunities, and an enterprise-wide approach to growth, creating an environment where specialized teams can do their best work while contributing to a larger mission.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated Test Stand Fabricator / Mechanic to join our team and support both internal and external fabrication projects across diverse aerospace test equipment builds. In this dynamic role, you will utilize advanced metal fabrication and mechanical assembly techniques to build custom weldment frames, piping networks, and tubing assemblies ranging from ¼” to 24” OD. This position accommodates candidates with fabrication experience from a trade school or field environments, though we are willing to train the right candidate who possesses a strong work ethic and a solid baseline of metal fabrication skills. We value energetic professionals who are eager to solve layout challenges, ensure precise structural fit-up, and deliver high-quality, reliable assemblies while maintaining rigorous safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build complex weldment frames, piping networks, and tubing assemblies from technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, layouts, and isometric plan/elevation sketches
- Cut, bend, flare, flange, and install stainless-steel tubing ranging from ¼” to 2” diameter, as well as piping materials including carbon steel and PVC
- Install and mount major system hardware including heat exchangers, pumps, motor assemblies, strainers, filters, control valves, and heavy-duty pipe flanges (150# to 2500#)
- Install a wide range of connection fittings including JIC, NPT, compression fittings, block flanges, ORB, and ORFS utilizing appropriate hand and torque tools
- Maintain, set up, and operate specialized shop machinery including band saws, plasma cutters, hydraulic tubing benders, ferrule seaters, flaring tools, drills, taps, and grinders
- Inspect all pipes, tubes, and finished mechanical assemblies post-operation to guarantee strict compliance with design drawings, quality specifications, and structural accuracy
- Clean and prepare all piping and tubing surfaces before and after welding processes to eliminate foreign object debris (FOD) and ensure flawless welds
- Collaborate closely with welding teams to ensure exact component alignment, precise weld fit-up, and highly coordinated structural builds
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while continuously monitoring tooling conditions to proactively prevent equipment breakage
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Prior metal fabrication experience obtained through an accredited trade school program or equivalent hands-on field experience
- Baseline proficiency in structural layout, reading technical blueprints, and applying applicable math skills (adding and subtracting fractions and decimals)
- Foundational knowledge of the piping trade, including industry standards, applications, and material characteristics (aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, and PVC)
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with standard fabrication hand tools, deburring tools, micrometers, tape measures, hole punches, and countersinks
- Ability to pass a mandatory pre-employment drug screening
- Ability to travel both within the USA and internationally
Preferred Skills:
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical thinking capabilities to optimize shop floor processes and resolve physical layout discrepancies
- Exceptional time management skills with a proven track record of working efficiently, maintaining a sustained production pace, and meeting strict project timelines
- High level of personal accountability, professional communication, and a proactive attitude toward asking clarifying questions and seeking direction
- Robust collaboration skills with a demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a diverse, cross-functional production team
- Basic computer navigation and utilization skills alongside the physical stamina required for extended periods of standing, crouching, lifting, and bending
What We Offer:
- Opportunity to lead the next generation of automated aerospace test equipment
- Collaborative engineering environment with full lifecycle exposure—from design to MRO validation
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Generous Simple IRA plan that includes employer matching funds
- Paid time off and holidays
