The Office of International Mission, which relates to the Board for International Mission and implements its policies, is responsible to the President of the Synod through the Chief Mission Officer for the work of the Synod in foreign countries as stated in the Bylaws.
Reporting Relationships
- In day-to-day responsibilities, the Specialist, Missionary Recruitment Inquiries and Calls is accountable to the Director, Missionary Recruitment.
Essential Job Functions
- Assists the missionary recruitment team as primary liaison for leads and candidates related to their status in the missionary candidate process.
- Serves as project manager coordinating, tracking and reporting on the screening process for missionary candidates (e.g., references, assessments, interviews).
- Facilitates system updates to support the processing of church worker missionary candidates between OIM and the Office of the Secretary, the districts, the universities/seminaries.
- Coordinate with the Ministry Support Team the assembly of a thorough dossier of information on each candidate to be considered by the OTP and the BIM for a Call/Appointment.
- In coordination with the Human Resources department, facilitate the background check process for all candidates and volunteers.
- Maintains up-to-date regional organizational charts.
- Maintains planning calendar for the missionary recruitment team.
- Assists the Director Missionary Recruitment with the web-based communication of missionary service opportunities by posting and keeping current missionary service opportunity.
- Supports and advances the efforts of LCMS International Mission to engage with the church-at-large.
- May be called upon to represent LCMS International Mission as an exhibitor at conferences and conventions.
- As part of the recruitment team work to develop lead generating ideas for future missionaries.
- Supports Short-term Teams unit in facilitating recruitment-focused services.
- Serve as the lead for the Shadow a Missionary program, allowing missionary candidates to experience the mission field.
- Maintains an understanding of the global context of missionary work conducted by OIM and how it relates to open positions.
- Supports OIM in the execution of large missionary recruitment gatherings and events.
Education and Experience
- Active member in good standing of a Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregation, faithful to the Holy Scriptures, and the Lutheran Confessions, and supportive of the Synod’s
- Constitution, Bylaws and policies.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience in candidate recruitment, assessment, and selection preferred. International mission experience or other professional international experience, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with people within as well as outside the department.
- Maintains discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Previous experience with budget tracking preferred.
- Knowledge of international mission fields’ ministries, strategies, and goals.
- Experience with Microsoft Office tools, project management software and HRIS systems or ability to learn required.
- Demonstrated ability to understand international locations and conditions.
- Position may require infrequent/limited domestic travel as situational needs arise.
