Classification: Full-Time, 10-month position
Start Date:

What You'll Do

Inspire Historical Thinking & Civic Engagement

You'll teach 4 sections of history/social studies courses (15-18 students each, 2-3 preps) designed to engage, challenge, and inspire students.

  • Design purposeful, inquiry-based curriculum that helps students develop historical thinking skills: sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and constructing evidence-based arguments
  • Use multi-modal instruction to reach diverse learners - discussions, Socratic seminars, primary source analysis, simulations, debates, projects, and writing
  • Create assessments that measure deep understanding, critical thinking, and skill development (not just memorization)
  • Develop a classroom culture of belonging where all students feel valued, heard, and challenged to grow - honoring diverse perspectives and experiences
  • Provide regular, timely feedback on student work that pushes thinking forward
  • Communicate informatively with parents and write thoughtful mid-semester comments for every student
  • Conduct afternoon tutorials (Monday-Thursday) and optional morning tutorials by appointment to support student learning

Mentor & Advise Students

Beyond the classroom, you'll serve as an advisor to approximately 10 students, providing academic guidance, pastoral care, and daily connection.

  • Serve as primary academic advisor and point of contact for parents
  • Lead daily advisory meetings to open the school day with your advisees
  • Conduct mid-semester student-parent conferences to discuss progress and goals
  • Attend assemblies and chapels with your advisory group each rotation
  • Build meaningful relationships that help students navigate academic, social, and personal growth

Contribute to School Life Beyond the Classroom

Lovett teachers don't just teach - they participate fully in our vibrant school community.

  • Engage in co-curricular activities: coach a sport, direct a play, sponsor a club, or take on other Upper School responsibilities
  • Participate in faculty, department, team, and grade-level meetings to collaborate on curriculum, student support, and school initiatives
  • Attend school events including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities (parent nights, graduation events, admission open houses, student/faculty interviews)

Grow as an Educator

We're committed to your professional development and expect you to engage actively in your own learning.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum design, assessment strategies, and student support
  • Reflect on student feedback and use it to improve your practice

  • Cultural competence and self-awareness - you're committed to ongoing development in these areas
  • Excellent organizational skills - you can manage multiple preps, grading, parent communication, and advisory responsibilities simultaneously

You are:

  • Student-centered - You genuinely love working with adolescents and see them as whole people, not just learners
  • Intellectually curious - You're energized by big questions, love learning alongside students, and model what it means to be a lifelong learner
  • Culturally responsive - You purposefully design curriculum and instruction to reach diverse learners and honor multiple perspectives on historical events
  • Collaborative - You thrive working with colleagues, value diverse viewpoints, and follow through on shared plans

  • A growth mindset about both your students and yourself
  • Emotional intelligence and the ability to navigate the complexity of adolescent development
  • A self-starting approach- you don't wait to be told what to do; you take initiative
  • The ability to balance care and accountability - you're warm and supportive while maintaining high standards
