Title: Vice President of Communications & Events
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid: 3 days a week onsite)
Compensation: $175,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
Position Summary
The Vice President of Communications & Events will lead a high-impact communications operation at the intersection of policy, law, and public affairs. This role is designed for a senior communications professional with experience in fast-paced, high-stakes environments, such as Capitol Hill, federal agencies, or national advocacy organizations.
Reporting to the CEO, this leader will drive an integrated communications strategy that elevates the Center’s voice among policymakers, media, and key stakeholders, while advancing legislative, legal, and fundraising priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications & Public Affairs
- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that supports policy priorities, legal initiatives, and organizational growth
- Serve as a senior advisor to the CEO on messaging, positioning, and external engagement
- Shape narratives around complex legal and civil rights issues for diverse audiences, including congressional offices, press, and donors
- Lead rapid response communications on emerging issues, ensuring timely, accurate, and strategic messaging
Media Relations & Digital Strategy
- Oversee national media strategy, including proactive press engagement, op-eds, and broadcast opportunities
- Manage and grow digital platforms (website, email, social media) to influence public discourse and key decision-makers
- Use data and analytics to refine messaging, target audiences, and measure impact
- Ensure consistency across all communications channels
Events & Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead the development and execution of high-profile events, including policy briefings, congressional engagements, donor events, and campus programs
- Design events as strategic tools for influencing policymakers, building coalitions, and advancing fundraising goals
- Ensure events reinforce organizational messaging and deliver measurable engagement outcomes
Leadership
- Directly manage our Director of Communications and an Events Manager, ensuring clear priorities, strong execution, and professional development
- Delegate effectively while maintaining strategic oversight of all communications and events initiatives
Internal Communications
- Develop and implement internal communications strategies to ensure staff are informed, aligned, and equipped to advance organizational priorities
- Partner with senior leadership to translate strategic priorities into actionable communications for internal teams
- Establish internal messaging frameworks, briefing materials, and talking points to ensure consistency across departments
- Support leadership communications, including all-staff updates, internal memos, and organizational announcements
Qualifications
Required
- 12 years of experience in communications, public affairs, or related fields, with senior leadership experience (Director, Chief, or VP level)
- Background on Capitol Hill, in a federal agency, national advocacy organization, comparable policy, or non-profit environment
- Demonstrated success managing communications in high-pressure, rapid-response settings
- Experience engaging with national media and shaping public narratives on policy issues
- Proven ability to plan and execute high-visibility events involving policymakers and senior stakeholders
- Exceptional writing, editing, and message development skills
