JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Shelter Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and execution of shelter services and ensuring a safe, structured, and dignity-centered environment for clients and the Light House community. This role combines hands-on supervision and proactive team leadership with a disciplined approach to shelter operations, procedural compliance, and incident management. A vital partner to the Shelter Manager, the Assistant Manager maintains operational continuity and readiness across a 24/7 schedule—requiring the flexibility to work varied shifts—and seamlessly assumes full managerial responsibilities in the absence of the Shelter Manager. As a highly visible, onsite leader, the Assistant Manager serves as an ambassador for the values of the organization, fostering a supportive team culture and leading with compassion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Shelter Operations and Management

  • Assist in daily shelter operations to maintain a safe, clean, and highly efficient environment for clients.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager and other departments to develop and implement shelter policies and operating procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with health, safety, and security standards; provide supervisory guidance to client facing staff for adherence best practices.
  • Maintain accurate, secure, and up-to-date records and reports, including client files, shift logs, and staff documentation.
  • Ensure proper, thorough documentation of all safety incidents and manage the necessary operational follow-ups.
  • Represent the shelter and organizational values with high professionalism.

Front-Line Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Provide active leadership, guidance, and scheduling support to Resident Assistants and front-line staff on duty.
  • Assist with client facing staff onboarding, continuous training, performance monitoring, and constructive feedback.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional, positive work environment that promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and accountability.
  • Act as the primary on-site point of contact and operational leader when the Shelter Manager is unavailable.

Trauma-Responsive Client Services, Intervention, and Support

  • Ensure all clients are treated with the highest level of dignity, respect, and compassion, modeling trauma-informed care on the floor.
  • Assist in coordinating streamlined client transitions, including intake, facility orientations, and discharge processes.
  • Support front-line staff in real-time de-escalation, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Provide comprehensive crisis management, including immediate emergency response and supervision for onsite incidents.
  • Refer clients to case management, counseling services, and internal or external community resources as appropriate.

Cross-Department Collaboration and Programming Coordination

  • Maintain open lines of communication and information regarding shelter procedures, client updates, and other relevant information.
  • Participate in cross-training of staff to develop proficiency in multiple shelter operations to ensure flexibility in scheduling, continuity of services and the ability to provide support in various roles as needed.
  • Collaborate with various teams and departments to strengthen and unite our One Agency vision and mission across the organization.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to stay grounded, think critically, and manage crisis situations effectively under pressure
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport quickly and resolve conflicts with empathy
  • Superb customer service skills with a dedicated, people-first mindset
  • Strong alignment with the values of equity, compassion, and trauma-informed care
  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn new software and data management systems quickly
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support a residential environment

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years of professional experience in a fast-paced, high-pressure, or public-facing environment
  • Transferable experience from fields such as applied healthcare, social services, human services, emergency services, or hospitality is highly valued and considered
  • Prior experience supervising teams, managing shifts, or leading others (strongly preferred)
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Healthcare Administration, or a related field (equivalent professional experience is fully considered)
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing

Preferred Qualifications (Training Provided): While the following qualifications are highly preferred, we are fully prepared to provide comprehensive, paid training and certification to the right candidate:

  • Mental Health First Aid
  • CPR / First Aid Certification
  • De-Escalation Techniques
  • Naloxone (Narcan) Administration
  • Training or foundational understanding of Trauma-Informed Care

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work in a fast-paced, residential shelter environment
  • Interact compassionately with individuals experiencing trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use
  • Respond quickly to emergencies and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Sit at a desk and work on a computer for prolonged periods
  • Lift up to 15 pounds at a time
  • Navigate stairs to access the second and third floors of the facility
