The Cellular Biologist II will work directly with the Lab Manager, Associate Director(s) and an experienced team of cellular biologists, specialists, computational analysts, and Ph.D. level scientists performing a wide range of molecular characterization of cells in droplets, in situ, and in complex cell culture systems. The Single Cell Biology core offers a great environment to learn cutting-edge technologies and actively participate in providing these assays as a scientific servicing to the JAX research community.

The Cellular Biologist track encompasses the technical staff whose primary responsibilities concern cellular and molecular biology laboratory techniques. These responsibilities are diverse; examples include cell culture establishment and maintenance; biospecimen handling, tissue dissociation and nuclei extraction; capturing, manipulating, amplifying nucleic acid; building NGS libraries; confocal, fluorescence, and multiplexed microscopy; liquid-handling platform management; protocol development and optimization; data collection and analysis. This role will involve working to interpret data, improve laboratory workflows, and optimize processes. The Cellular Biologist may be required to work flexible shifts that may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on the demands of laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities And Essential Functions

  • Primary responsibilities are to perform and implement 2D and 3D cell cultures for the 3D HCS screening platform. Maintain cell cultures associated with the Single Cell Biology Laboratory core’s activities. Work with the Lab Manager to assist on assay development, set up cell cultures, and support automation associated with cell screening. Prepare and manage cell culture for 3D cell culture assay development, cell screening service within the laboratory and with customers to meet individual project needs.
  • Documentation of results; implement protocols from the literature; identify problems, troubleshoot, and analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols; modify, refine, or adapt techniques and procedures; modify and/or adjust quality control measures.
  • Plan and monitor resources needed to operate the cell screening component of the laboratory; maintain inventory control; coordinate space, field, equipment and/or facilities; may monitor expenditures
  • Lead exchange of research information through demonstration and instruction. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline or 0-2 years of directly related experience in a Laboratory setting.
  • Cell culture skills required, with a 3D-cell culture experience
  • Demonstrated ability in development of research protocols
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project
  • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional, and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program
  • Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct
  • Self-motivated with the ability to organize time effectively, demonstrated ability to manage details, and demonstrate a pro-active attitude
  • Ability to develop technical documents and presentations
  • Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to be flexible
  • Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/weekend/holiday)
  • Regular, reliable, and consistent attendance
  • Experience with human clinical sample handling is a plus
  • Experience with laboratory automation is a plus

Minimum Education Required: Bachelor's degree

Education Preferred: Master's degree

Minimum Experience Required: Two (2) years

Experience Preferred: Four (4) years

Pay range: $52,712 - $68,525
