What are the responsibilities and job description for the iHub Interior Design Intern position at The Innovation Hub?
Company Description
The Innovation Hub, or iHub, is a non-profit incubator established in 2023 to support young entrepreneurs in Utah County. As a vital part of the Utah entrepreneurial ecosystem, iHub provides early-stage startups with essential resources and guidance to overcome common challenges. It serves as a central hub where budding entrepreneurs with validated business ideas can access knowledge, tools, and support to accelerate their growth. iHub is committed to fostering innovation and creating successful business ventures within the community.
As our Interior Design Intern, you will assess the current layout of the iHub Founders Floor and
develop a thoughtful, evidence-based plan to rearrange our existing furniture for improved flow,
functionality, and aesthetics. No new furniture purchases are required — your challenge is to unlock
the potential already in the room.
You will collaborate closely with founders who use the space daily, incorporate their feedback into
your design process, and present a final approved layout to management before overseeing its
physical implementation.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct an initial walkthrough and assessment of the Founders Floor, documenting existing
furniture placement, traffic flow, and pain points
• Meet and coordinate with founders to understand individual workspace needs and
preferences
• Develop a proposed new furniture layout that improves movement, productivity, and the
overall aesthetic of the space
• Present the proposed layout to iHub management and incorporate feedback through an
approval process
• Prepare a clear, professional layout sheet illustrating the final approved design with
annotated rationale for each decision
• Lead and coordinate a final "Moving Day" in which all furniture is physically rearranged
according to the approved plan
• Be prepared to explain and justify each rearrangement decision and its intended impact on
productivity and space function
Ideal Candidate
• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an Interior Design, Architecture, or related
program
• Foundational understanding of space planning, traffic flow, and human-centered design
principles
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills — comfortable conducting interviews with
founders and presenting to management
• Organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing a flexible, low-hours-per-week
schedule independently
• Familiarity with basic floor plan tools (hand sketching, AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar) is a
plus
• Genuine interest in the startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem is a bonus
Gain
• Real-world, end-to-end interior design project experience — from assessment through
implementation
• Portfolio piece: a completed, professionally executed workspace redesign
• Exposure to a startup incubator environment and access to a network of early-stage
founders
• Mentorship and feedback from iHub leadership throughout the process
• A letter of recommendation upon successful completion of the internship
A Note on Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. iHub is a startup incubator committed to supporting the next generation
of professionals. While this role does not offer monetary compensation, it is designed to provide
meaningful, resume-worthy experience and direct mentorship. We are happy to support academic
credit arrangements where applicable — please inquire when applying.
