Job Summary

The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for leading the organization’s fundraising strategy and achieving annual revenue goals that sustain and grow The Hunger Coalition’s impact. Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, this role builds strong relationships with donors, foundations, and community partners while developing systems and strategies that support long-term financial sustainability.

This role provides leadership to the development team and ensures fundraising efforts are strategic, coordinated, and aligned with organizational priorities. The Director of Philanthropy serves as the organization’s lead strategist and accountable leader for annual fundraising performance and revenue outcomes as well as potential significant capital or programmatic fundraising efforts.

This position works in close partnership with the Director of Communications to ensure alignment between fundraising strategy and organizational messaging.



Key Responsibilities

Strategic Fundraising Leadership & Revenue Performance

  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive fundraising strategy to achieve annual revenue goals and strengthen financial sustainability of approximately $3.5M .
  • Serve as the lead strategist and accountable leader for fundraising performance and revenue outcomes.
  • Establish clear annual fundraising plans, benchmarks, and performance metrics.
  • Identify opportunities for growth in individual giving, foundation support, corporate partnerships, and special initiatives.
  • Provide regular forecasting and performance updates to the Executive Director and Board.
  • Support the growth of blended giving strategies, including the integration of current and planned gifts.
  • Monitor and proactively respond to emerging philanthropy trends, relevant tax legislation and policy changes.

Major Gifts & Donor Relationship Management

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board member to actively manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects, ensuring consistent cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Develop personalized engagement strategies for major donors and donor prospects.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with foundations, corporations, and community partners.
  • Continue leading the development of our planned giving program.
  • Support Board engagement in fundraising and donor stewardship.
  • Maintain strong relationships with institutional funders.

Grants & Institutional Funding

  • Oversee the organization’s grant strategy and grant pipeline.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of grant proposals and reports.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements and accurate use of restricted funds.

Fundraising Campaigns & Events

  • Define fundraising campaign goals, timelines, and revenue targets including ROI evaluations.
  • Oversee planning and execution of fundraising events to achieve revenue targets.
  • Ensure events and campaigns align with organizational strategy and donor engagement priorities.

Development Systems & Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the fundraising budget; track revenue projections and fundraising performance.
  • Ensure accurate donor data management, gift acceptance and recording, and reporting within CRM and financial systems.
  • Prepare quarterly fundraising reports/dashboards for the Executive Director, Board, and Finance Committee.
  • Identify risks, opportunities, and recommended actions related to fundraising performance.

Team Leadership & Organizational Collaboration

  • Manage and support development staff to advance fundraising and engagement goals.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy across the organization.
  • Collaborate with leadership team members to align fundraising strategy with organizational priorities.
  • Participate in Directors Team meetings and organizational planning processes.
  • Provide support for THC programs as needed.



Qualifications

Required

  • 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience with demonstrated success in revenue generation
  • Experience managing major gifts and donor relationships
  • Experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Strong analytical and financial management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred

  • Experience in human services, food systems, community development, or related fields
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors
  • Experience managing grants and institutional funding
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) communication skills
  • Experience using CRM systems (e.g., Bloomerang)

Training & Development: The Hunger Coalition has an internal leadership development program. We uphold a coaching culture including performance management with regular weekly one-on-one meetings for real-time communication regarding expectations and accountability. We have a minimal focus on bi-annual or annual evaluations. Staff have access to a $250-$500 annual professional development stipend to support development.
