HJF is seeking a Pathology Technician II to be responsible for assisting with tissue and histologic preparations to be used for diagnostic purposes in support of clinical research. This level is distinguished by developing proficiency conducting tasks and assignments as directed. Contributes to team objectives and outcomes as guided with moderate supervision that allows some latitude for independent judgment. Limited problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.

This position will be in support of DoW/USU Brain Tissue Repository (BTR) under the Department of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. The BTR was established by the Department of War to advance traumatic brain injury research. The BTR’s mission is to better understand the effects of traumatic brain injury and promote overall brain health of the Warfighter. Using the best science, we support our service members and their families to help care for our military after a head injury.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, document, and process brain tissue specimens based on established protocols.
  • Properly label, store, and document tissue samples to facilitate accurate data records.
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures for tissue handling and processing.
  • Ensure compliance with stipulated laboratory regulations, Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), and other ethical guidelines associated with safe handling of patient information in adherence to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Assists in gathering and recording data for research protocols.
  • Prepare reports on the status of tissue inventory, processing, and any issues encountered.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment established for tissue processing and preparation, thus ensuring their proper functioning.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
  • Preference given to candidates with experience in pathology and laboratory medicine, and particularly that related to tissue specimen handling and/or autopsy.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of the processes concerning tissue and organ preparation for pathologic examination.
  • Knowledge of routine tissue preparation requirements for research activities.
  • Maintains effective communication including verbal and written skills, and articulate concerns and updates in a professional manner. Completes all assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of proper handling biological hazards and their safe use and disposal.
  • Meticulous accuracy in preserving tissue sample integrity.
  • Works proficiently in a fluctuating work environment, including maintaining productivity during laboratory down-time.
  • Embraces new duties when needed, following appropriate instruction and supervision.
  • Performs basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office. Understands and articulates basic medical terminology and laboratory functions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs. Lifting:
  • Ability to stand at a laboratory bench or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ASCP certification preferred but not required.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
  • Work hours for this position will include before and after regular working hours (including weekends); flexibility in this regard is required.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000-$82,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.

Salary : $61,000 - $82,000
