HJF is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator II to conduct clinical research supporting the development and application of emerging interventions at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP). This position will coordinate and execute study activities for a clinical trial evaluating brain stimulation, pharmacotherapy, and behavioral interventions to improve mental health and prevent suicide in active-duty service members. The Clinical Research Coordinator II will play a key role in ensuring compliance, safety, and efficiency across all stages of the research lifecycle, including study startup, participant recruitment and scheduling, data and specimen collection, treatment delivery, project tracking, and study operations.

This position will be in support of the Department of Psychiatry / Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress. The position is located at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, VA.

The Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) is one of the nation’s oldest and most highly regarded, academic-based organizations dedicated to advancing trauma-informed knowledge, leadership and methodologies. The Center’s work addresses a wide scope of trauma exposure from the consequences of combat, operations other than war, terrorism, natural and human-made disasters, and public health threats as well as risk and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviors. CSTS is a part of our nation’s federal medical school, Uniformed Services University (USU), and its Department of Psychiatry. These affiliations represent the Center’s history, mission and future directions as a major contributor to our country’s understanding of the impact of trauma and the advancement of trauma-informed care. The Department has active research programs in the Basic and Clinical Sciences and Neurosciences. In addition to intramural research projects, the Department maintains active research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Science Foundation, the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force. The department has ongoing collaborations with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, is sponsor of the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress and provides psychiatry residency training through its affiliations with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center and Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center and the National Capital Area Graduate Medical Education Consortium.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient records and screens patients for eligibility to participate in research protocols.
  • Interviews patients for study participation and collects and analyzes appropriate data for recruitment purposes; determines patient commitment and obtains informed consent.
  • Educates patients about the research protocol, their role in the study, and required procedures, risks, and expectations.
  • Schedules participant visits, study sessions, and follow-up appointments, both in-person and virtual, in coordination with clinical and research staff.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, investigators, and physicians, serving as a patient resource.
  • Assists with, plans, executes, and/or oversees administration of all elements of the treatment protocol, including pharmacotherapy, brain stimulation, and behavioral intervention.
  • Collaborates with supervising physicians, research assistants, and other team members within and across study sites to ensure quality control, accuracy, and fidelity to all elements of the treatment protocol.
  • Collects, organizes, catalogs, disseminates, and maintains research data and study documentation.
  • Maintains a current inventory of supplies and re-orders study-specific supplies as necessary
  • Transcribes and resolves queries of data in case report forms (hardcopy or electronic) and prepares documents in collaboration with study leadership.
  • Ensures adherence to legal, professional, and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy.
  • Assures all protocol activities comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), institutional policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with monitoring visits, audits, and inspections by sponsors, IRBs, and regulatory authorities.
  • Supports regulatory activities, including maintenance of regulatory binders, protocol amendments, adverse event documentation, and IRB submissions, as assigned.
  • Monitors participant safety, including documenting and reporting adverse events and protocol deviations in accordance with study and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team; provides research support for projects pertaining to military mental health.
  • Coordinates with personnel within and across study sites as needed.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor, including attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects.
  • Research administration experience, e.g., preparation, coordination, and submission of IRB protocols.
  • Experience with participant recruitment and scheduling.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; able to communicate effectively and work with individuals of all levels.
  • Must be able to set and meet deadlines.
  • Strong ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) preferred but not required.
  • May require U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a Clinic setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000-$90,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
