HJF is seeking a Clinical Research Coordinator I to perform clinical research and patient treatment in conjunction with one or more specified clinical research protocols. Developing adherence to legal, professional and ethical codes with respect to confidentiality and privacy. Helps assure that protocol requirements are achieved within Good Clinical Practices. This is the first of four levels, and the entry level position for the Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) series.

This position will be in support of the Complex Exposure Threats Center of Excellence (CETCE) at the VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. The Clinical Research Coordinator I will support the center’s research portfolio focused on environmental exposures and health outcomes, by identifying, engaging, and enrolling eligible participants in accordance with approved study protocols and regulatory requirements. This role plays a central part in ensuring timely study enrollment and high‑quality participant interactions. The Research Recruiter conducts outreach, screens potential participants, coordinates study visits, and maintains accurate recruitment records. The position may support multiple research studies simultaneously.

HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct participant recruitment activities, including outreach, community engagement, and telephone screening.
  • Identify, approach, and educate potential subjects about available research studies, ensuring clear communication of study procedures, risks, and benefits.
  • Screen and evaluate participant eligibility using study‑specific criteria; document screening outcomes according to protocol.
  • Coordinate and schedule study visits, ensuring a positive participant experience and adherence to study timelines.
  • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records of recruitment activities, participant contacts, screening logs, and enrollment metrics.
  • Enter and update participant data and recruitment status into electronic databases or tracking systems.
  • Support informed‑consent processes of the study protocols.
  • Collaborate with study coordinators, investigators, and research staff to ensure smooth workflow and timely communication regarding participant needs or study‑related issues.
  • Assist with development and distribution of recruitment materials, including flyers, scripts, outreach content, and community‑facing resources.
  • Participate in community events, clinics, or outreach activities to promote study awareness.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of participant information and follow all HIPAA, IRB, and institutional research regulations.
  • Support retention activities, including reminder calls, follow‑ups, and participant engagement efforts.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and quality‑assurance activities as required.
  • Perform other recruitment‑related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, or a science related field.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Ability to explain research concepts clearly and professionally.
  • Attention to detail with strong documentation and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain organization in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Comfort working directly with participants in clinical and community settings.
  • Familiarity with research practices, HIPAA, and human subjects protection regulations preferred.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
  • Ability to obtain a Without compensation appointment with the DC VA Medical Center.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $46,100-$57,164. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
