The Inspiring Histories Supervisor provides day-to-day leadership and operational support for the Inspiring Histories program in Greenfield Village. This role supervises presenter staff, supports program delivery and historical interpretation, and helps ensure an engaging, accurate, and memorable guest experience. Working closely with the Manager, Inspiring Histories, this position assists with staff development, daily operations, program execution, and preservation of historic resources while serving as a lead presenter and role model for the team.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Assist the Manager, Inspiring Histories with the recruitment, onboarding, training, coaching, scheduling, and day-to-day supervision of presenter staff
  • Provide daily operational leadership by coordinating staffing, assignments, site readiness, and program execution
  • Serve as a lead presenter by delivering engaging historical interpretation and mentoring presenter staff through coaching and on-site training
  • Ensure historical presentations are accurate, engaging, and aligned with established interpretive goals and storylines
  • Support staff by answering operational questions, resolving guest concerns, and providing guidance throughout the day
  • Conduct daily staff briefings and communicate operational priorities, safety expectations, and program updates
  • Monitor the appearance, readiness, and operation of assigned historic sites, including proper use of period clothing, equipment, and interpretive spaces
  • Protect historic structures, artifacts, collections, landscapes, and equipment by ensuring appropriate handling and stewardship practices
  • Collaborate with Greenfield Village leadership and cross-functional teams to support daily operations, special events, and institutional initiatives
  • Assist with the development and evaluation of interpretive programs, educational materials, and related content
  • Maintain inventories of supplies, equipment, and program materials
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, guest-focused work environment that reflects The Henry Ford's service standards
  • Perform additional responsibilities that support the operational objectives and strategic priorities of Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred
  • Previous supervisory, lead, or mentoring experience preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software suite
  • Experience presenting to public audiences, facilitating educational programs, or working in museums, historic sites, education, or cultural organizations preferred
  • Availability to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings, particularly during seasonal events
  • Experience with historic cooking, baking, hearth cooking, or fire tending preferred
  • Valid Driver’s license

  • Willingness to learn operation of historic and antique vehicles
  • Interest in African American history, historic interpretation, historic foodways, gardening, and living history programming preferred
PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENT

Physical: Frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout Greenfield Village; Occasional sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and lifting up to 40 lbs; Manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate interpretive tools, equipment, and mobile technology

Mental: Strong attention to detail and historical accuracy; ability to problem solve, prioritize work, and make sound decisions in a dynamic guest environment; ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining professionalism and guest focus

Working Conditions: Regular work outdoors in all weather conditions; Exposure to non-climate
