The Harker School is seeking a reliable and safety-focused Van Driver to support the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school campuses and school-related activities. This role is essential to daily transportation operations, ensuring students arrive on time while maintaining high standards of vehicle safety, cleanliness, and student conduct.
The Van Driver operates school vehicles with care, follows established transportation procedures, and helps create a safe and respectful environment for all passengers. As a member of the Harker community, the Van Driver is expected to uphold the school’s mission, values, and policies while demonstrating professionalism and representing the school positively in all interactions.
Work Schedule:
This position typically works Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, with additional weekend shifts occasionally available to support school activities and events.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 25 years of age (insurance requirement).
- Valid California Driver’s License appropriate for passenger van operation.
- Ability to successfully pass federal and state background checks.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and comply with any applicable ongoing testing requirements.
- Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, if required for the assigned vehicle or route.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Transport students to and from school campuses, athletic events, field trips, and other school-sponsored activities as assigned.
- Conduct required pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and promptly report any defects, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to the Transportation Manager.
- Maintain accurate records, including vehicle inspection checklists, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, and incident or accident reports.
- Maintain appropriate student behavior while transporting passengers; address minor behavioral issues and report concerns according to school procedures.
- Use two-way communication devices to remain in contact with the transportation office or dispatcher as needed.
- Issue and monitor student RFID/Smart Tags when applicable.
- Fuel assigned vehicles as required and ensure vehicles are clean, orderly, and presentable at all times.
- Participate in required safety meetings, training sessions, and workshops conducted by the Transportation Department or required by law.
- Safely operate Harker-owned vans and other assigned vehicles in accordance with school transportation policies and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
