Technical Director
The Green Room Community Theatre (TGR) is seeking a skilled, organized, and collaborative Technical Director to join our team at the historic Old Post Office Playhouse in downtown Newton, NC. This position supports our mission to Entertain, Educate, and Engage through high-quality community theatre.
Position Overview
The Technical Director oversees all technical aspects of productions and facility operations, including lighting,
sound, scenic design & construction, and rigging safety and oversight. This role works closely with directors,
designers, staff, and volunteers to ensure safe and efficient productions.
Key Responsibilities
• Build theatre sets and oversee all technical aspects of productions, with primary responsibility for designing, constructing,
painting, installing, and striking scenic elements
• Supervise lighting, sound, scenery, and rigging, ensuring safe installation and use of all overhead elements
• Oversee load-ins, tech rehearsals, and strike
• Attend meetings and rehearsals as needed to supervise and support technical aspects of productions.
• Maintain theatre equipment and recommend upgrades
• Train and supervise volunteers and interns
• Enforce backstage and rigging safety protocols
• Maintain and oversee the scene shop
• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrate a strong organizational and communication skills with a collaborative, positive work ethic.
• Utilize Vectorworks or other relevant theatrical software proficiently in the execution of job responsibilities
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Experience as a Technical Director or similar role (Degree preferred)
• Strong knowledge of lighting, sound, scenic construction, and theatrical rigging, supported by formal training or
professional experience
• Experience working with volunteers or educational theatre preferred
• Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs; work at heights; and stand, climb, and work backstage for extended periods.
