This is a full-time, ONSITE position. LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY, within reasonable commuting distance to the Lakeland Conference office - 33815.

The Accounting Specialist provides comprehensive accounting and financial support to The Florida Conference of The United Methodist Church. This position ensures accurate and timely processing of financial transactions across accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and reporting functions. The role supports the Controller and Treasurer in maintaining financial integrity and compliance while exemplifying the mission and values of the Church.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable & Vendor Management
  • Assist with reviewing, verifying, and processing of payables for accuracy and compliance with Conference policies.
  • Assist with coordinating weekly payments via electronic banking and paper checks.
  • Assist with maintaining vendor records, including annual Form 1099 filings and Florida new-hire reporting.
  • Support employee and Conference credit card processing and administration.
  • Scan and archive all accounts payable transactions in the electronic filing system (Ebridge).
  • Accounts Receivable & Cash Receipts
  • Process daily cash receipts from bank lockboxes and electronic payments (PayPal, Vanco, ACH).
  • Prepare reports for monthly payouts to Conference-related entities.
  • Prepare monthly accounts receivable aging and other reports as needed.
  • Payroll & General Accounting
  • Support biweekly payroll processing, verifying accuracy of payroll data and preparing reports.
  • Prepare and post journal entries, including adjustments, transfers, and recurring transactions.
  • Maintain due to/due from accounts and assist with monthly reconciliations.
  • Support fixed asset accounting and audit documentation as needed.
  • Assist with monthly financial close, reporting, and year-end audit preparation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or business, or equivalent work experience.
  • Two or more years of accounting experience in accounts payable, receivable, or payroll functions.
  • Strong technical accounting skills and proficiency with Windows-based software (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Experience with accounting software and electronic document management systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated appreciation for the nature and mission of The United Methodist Church.

Preferences

  • Experience in a non-profit organization.

Working Environment

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. The position requires extended periods at a computer workstation. Occasional lifting (up to 20 lbs.) may be required.
