Individual Giving Officer

Job Description

Organization Overview:

The Door was established in 1972 with the vision of creating an innovative youth development model to address the complex needs of young New Yorkers. Today, we serve up to eleven thousand youth annually across our four New York City locations, including our lower Manhattan and South Bronx youth centers and two supportive housing sites on the Lower East Side. The Door’s success lies in our commitment to meeting young people where they are and providing them with the comprehensive and integrated services they need to reach their potential. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis intervention, legal assistance, high school equivalency and college preparation services, career development, housing support, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals—all for free and in a diverse, caring, and supportive environment.

Broome Street Academy (BSA), a charter high school embedded at The Door, enrolls 200 students and prioritizes applicants who are experiencing housing instability or have been involved in the child welfare system. The wraparound supports provided in partnership with The Door promote student success in school and in life.

Position Overview:

The Door’s Development and Communications Department is seeking an entrepreneurial, relationship-driven, and mission-aligned full-time Individual Giving Officer to join our dynamic 14-person team. This newly created position reports to the Sr. Director of Individual and Leadership Giving and will play an important role in strengthening The Door’s individual donor pipeline and expanding support for the organization’s programs and services.

The Individual Giving Officer will manage a portfolio of approximately 125-150 individual donors and prospects giving between $1,000 and $9,999 annually, with a focus on donor retention, engagement, and strategic upgrades. This role will help grow the pipeline of mid-level donors by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors who have the potential to increase their giving over time.

The Individual Giving Officer will work closely with the Chief Advancement Officer, Sr. Director of Individual and Leadership Giving, Development Manager, Senior Advisor, and other members of the Advancement team to support the organization’s broader fundraising strategy, including preparing donors for deeper engagement and long-term investment in The Door and Broome Street Academy.

The ideal candidate will be an excellent relationship manager who is comfortable engaging donors through meetings, events, and personalized communications. They should be highly organized, comfortable managing multiple priorities, and eager to contribute to a collaborative, fast-paced fundraising environment.

This role comes at an exciting moment for The Door as the organization strengthens its individual giving program and prepares for significant long-term growth in philanthropic support. The Individual Giving Officer will play an important role in expanding the donor pipeline and helping cultivate the next generation of leadership supporters for The Door and Broome Street Academy.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage a portfolio of approximately 125-150 individual donors and prospects, with giving between $1,000 and $9,999 annually, through a structured moves management process. This portfolio is expected to generate approximately $500,000 annually in contributed revenue through retention, upgrades, and new donor acquisition.
  • Develop and maintain personalized cultivation strategies to strengthen donor relationships, increase retention, and upgrade donors to higher giving levels
  • Maintain consistent engagement with portfolio donors through meetings, calls, written outreach, and events, completing approximately 80–100 donor meetings annually.
  • Manage and oversee records and reporting for a balanced portfolio of retained donors, upgrade prospects, newly acquired donors, and strategically selected lapsed donors.
  • Identify new donor prospects through research, events, referrals, and internal data analysis, and maintain a minimum number of active prospects in the portfolio at all times
  • Support the Chief Advancement Officer and senior leadership in preparing for donor meetings, proposals, and stewardship activities when appropriate
  • Participate in portfolio review meetings and contribute to prospect identification and qualification discussions across the Advancement team
  • Assist with donor events, campaign initiatives, and other engagement opportunities designed to deepen relationships with The Door’s community of supporters
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned in support of The Door’s fundraising and donor engagement goals

Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of fundraising, nonprofit development, sales, or relationship management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple donor relationships simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate The Door’s mission and impact
  • Comfortable conducting donor meetings and representing the organization externally
  • Experience working with a moves management system and donor database preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate recordkeeping
  • Proficiency in MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and data processing
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge or a comparable fundraising database preferred
  • A collaborative team player who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, and committed to advancing the mission of The Door and Broome Street Academy
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and the empowerment of young people from diverse backgrounds.

Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week, with the option of hybrid work 1-2 days a week available. Some evening hours required.

Compensation: $70,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience, plus a generous benefits package

Multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Proficiency in French, Spanish, or Arabic preferred.
