JOB TITLE: Gallery Teacher 

DEPARTMENT: Education Programs 

REPORTS TO: Manager, Gallery Teaching 

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt 

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Project-Based 

 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY 

Under the supervision of the Manager, Gallery Teaching, the Gallery Teacher will lead Pre-K-12 school group experience with art using learner-centered methods. The Gallery Teacher will help develop and evaluate the programs they deliver. Gallery teachers facilitate programs for multiple school groups per day, four days per week. Gallery Teachers work within the DIA galleries.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Lead multiple interactive gallery or DIA Away experiences per day with groups of Pre-K-12 students, where students explore, discover, and learn by engaging with works of art in the collection and each other.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching all areas of the DIA collection.
  • Understand Michigan curriculum standards and know how to apply progressive teaching practices to meet them.
  • Use a variety of proven techniques for engaging youth of all ages.
  • Work with the gallery teaching team and supervisors to develop, evaluate and refine gallery learning experiences for groups of Pre-K-12 students.
  • Use professional “coaching” techniques to assist fellow gallery teachers in improving their practice; use coaching from others to continually improve one’s own practice.
  • Participate in reflective practice, individually and as part of a team to improve teaching skills.
  • Communicate with Pre-K-12 teachers to coordinate some aspects of field trip implementation.
  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field required. Three (3) years of experience working with youth in a school or in another formal education program required. Museum teaching experience preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.  

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

  • Demonstrated knowledge of art, art history or cultural studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of constructivist or learner-centered teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to share complex information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally to diverse audiences through talking or writing.
  • Ability to provide information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally through talking or writing.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the desire and ability to work with a close-knit team.
  • Must have demonstrated active listening and communication and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and provide instruction clearly to diverse individuals of all ages.
  • Must have exemplary written, verbal, and listening communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange accurate information using various methods including in-person, telephone, and email. Ability to move independently throughout the museum for up to three hours per day.
